The Rest Is Noise: Listening To The Twentieth Century through its music

Inspired by a reread of Alex Ross' book over the summer (The Rest is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century), and the Southbank's year long festival http://therestisnoise.southbankcentr...out/jude-kelly, I have started a thread dedicated to this century's most startling and amazingly varied music.

From Mahler to Radiohead, via Schoenberg, Ornette Coleman, Stockhausen, Bernstein, The Velvet Underground, Jimi Hendrix, Can, The Sex Pistols and a million others!

Kicking off with Berio's 'Sinfonia' 1968.

    Podcast http://podbay.fm/show/464777729/e/13...00?autostart=1

Now listening to the performance by Göteborgs Symfoniker, Peter Eötvös and London Voices, Deutsche Grammophon.

    Point of order:
the Sex Pistols were the Last Century.

As were most of the rest.

but GREAT idea for a thread.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Just finished listening to the Lutoslawski Cello Concerto from the RFH, earlier Gerhard Symphony #1.

Never time to be bored with this stuff around.

"That century's", or" the last century's" surely ?

But its a great idea for a thread, despite you not knowing which century we are in.

No, I am talking about the XXth century and the music belongs to this century (ie 20th) not any other century (any other one including the present one!)

Yes you bloody donut, I know I said this century. That's because the century I was talking about is that one (20th!). I bet you found yourself in a lot of detentions at school.

oh yes, loads of detentions., but usually for smoking or football supporting in school hours.

but I knew which century I was in, down to the nearest decade usually.

it's no good wriggling, you should, for clarity, (and for legal purposes) have SAID " The XX Century" or THAT century. Casual onlookers will think that you think that its still the twentieth century.

Which, TBF, it is, in much of the west country and the Isle of Wight.

Edit: The verdict is in......Thank you M'Lud.

It's all about context m'lud. I was talking about the twentieth century and its music; it therefore had to be this, not that.

                      P.S. The court's an ass.

Our Kipper chums like to think it's 1956
which is before some of the great music of the LAST century

Come on where's the pedant who will insist that not everyone uses the same calendar ? I wonder what century John Taverner (the one who is alive) thinks we are in ?

Now listening (on topic and on task) to Coming Together (the Eighth Blackbird version)

Indeed. "This" quite clearly refered to the century mentioned in the title given to the thread, and not the current one.
