    Booking Fees

Ye gods, do these vary! I paid £0.50 for a ticket at LSO St.Luke's, and they hadn't automatically set the new 'donation' check box to £3.00 (tut tut, Wigmore Hall). In fact, it was at zero.

Today, I was looking into screenings of Glyndebourn's Tristan und Isolde. The Stables in Milton Keynes offers two prices (£10, £12) but, sweet Mammon, the fees!

'Booking Fees of £1.80 per ticket plus a Transaction Fee of £2.80 apply'. A whopping £6.40 on top of the tickets!

Well, I wrote to tell them what I thought of that. Let's just say the air turned a deeper shade of cobalt, though perhaps they aren't familiar with Captain Grose's 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue and will think I'm complimenting them.

It's particularly annoying when the fees don't apply for bookings made in person at the theatre, and you live too far away to be able to do that.

When I phone them, I always tell the Bridgewater Hall and the Lowry that they are discriminating against people who live in Liverpool, but I sometimes suspect that was the intention.

I looked at an LSO St Lukes concert, IIRC the booking fee was £2.50 for a lunchtime concert ticket price £10 !!!!!

My most recent moment was when I visted Frome to book some tickets at the Cheese and Grain. Usual online fees of a couple of quid each, so as I was in the area I thought i would pop in.
Big sign on box office, " Debit and Creit card fee £1.20" !!!(and you have to pay an hours parking £1 unless you want a long walk).
So walked to bank, got my £70 out, went back and paid. Asked nicely if people tended to complain, and was told that almost everybody does.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I thought it was, too, TS, but on booking for a lunchtime concert it turned out to be 50p. I'm off to see Vilde Frang perform Mozart in a few weeks' time.

I'm glad you do that. I try to give them a hard time too. Even though the staff who deal with the public are only following orders, I'm sure some of it gets through to the Fat Cats.

Just booked a ticket at poole Lighthouse for the Seasiders.
Ticket was advertised as £15 , which actually breaks down at £13.50 plus £1.50 fee.
It was a cheapest ticket, but somehow seeing £15 and actually paying £15 felt much less of a ripoff than seeing £13.50 and then having $1.50 added.

illogical Captain, as Dr Spock would doubtless have said in a booking queue.

and incidentally, if I was running booking at somewhere of modest size, I would encourage phone bookings. Who knows what add on sales might be achieved, by a knowledgable and friendly person taking the calls?

Today's sale of tickets for the Monty Python show at the O2 on 1st July put ticket-touting into a whole new dimension. The Daily Telegraph was selling £29 tickets for over £100 from the start of selling. The more expensive seats were proportionately inflated. I don't know how they get away with it.

plenty of folk daft enough to pay, is the easy answer.

I hasten to add that I wasn't one of them. However, waiting in queue for over an hour on a more reasonable site eventually resulted in all tickets being sold out, though I understand they have now extended the run to 3 performances.

The only reason that ticket price is standing there like that is cos it's been nailed there by 5 people who should know a lot better.

As Cleese said yesterday that most of the show will probably consist of amended old acts, because in his words, people attending rock gigs don't take to new materials, adding that prospects for follow-ups or tours will depend on attendance numbers, I wouldn't bother going, quite frankly.

Down the line there'll be a DVD with all the Best Bits to be discounted by zoverstocks in six months time, and then to be found on youtube

I thoroughly dislike venues which employ booking agencies which add a booking fee to each ticket, and then a further administrative charge on top. However, some agencies, such as ATG, do offer reductions with a discount card (paid for) so can actually work out cheaper than otherwise.
