    CD shops in Leeds?

Not sure if this is the right sub-forum for this, so apologies if not.

I have to accompany a sprog to Leeds University for an interview in a few weeks and will have a couple of spare hours to while away as she is put through her paces. Never been there before, so can anyone point me in the direction of a good classical CD shop within walking distance of the university? Failing that, I'm also a sucker for second hand bookshops....

Sadly, I don't think there is a good classical CD shop in Leeds: I've tried, but since Graham Bennet's Classical Record Shop closed over ten years ago, no one's taken up the challenge. There used to be a variably decent second-hand CD shop in the Merrion Centre, but that also closed down. There's an HMV store

Can't help with Second-hand bookshops, either - there used to be so many. There are some listed on the Internet, but most are Charity Shops, and the two or three that are proper shops are rather out of town (Harehills and Kirkstall).

To be frank, you'd probably spend your time more profitably in the Art Gallery. Sorry.

Thanks for the reply fg. That's a shame, though, especially for a city with a good cultural reputation, not to have any decent CD or book shops You're right, in that case I'll probably have a look round the city centre and then home in on the art gallery.

Yes, I should have said that it's a great city in which to be a student: Opera North, the West Yorkshire Playhouse, the Hyde Park and Cottage Road cinemas, a good International Concert series, plenty of Chamber Music, together with all the activities on-campus and some decent pubs, watchable Football and Rugby teams, a splendid cricket ground - and not far from the North Yorkshire moors, Bolton Abbey, Harewood House etc. And some decent tradtional shops on the outskirts of the city (where the majority of the student accommodation is). But in the city centre, the marvellous Market aside, it's all the usuual chain store names, alas.

Yes, several parents of Leeds University students have enthused about the university and the city, so I'm looking forward to the trip.

Do you mean Kirkgate market - is it worth a detour, if I have time?

Kirkgate Market (bottom of Briggate)[the old bit rather than the adjacent new bit] has fantastic iron work [if you are lucky on the right day there's a second hand market]....and just across road The Corn Exchange (circular building)....both are in the sub-fusc bit of the centre....
It's definitely a young peoples city....Library, Art Gallery, Museum, Henry Moore Sculpture Centre all next to one another (10 min walk from Railway Station....)(15 minutes from Parkinson Steps which is the main facade of University)

If your daughter's interview happens to be on a Friday, you might prefer to go to one of the Free lunchtime concerts run by the University, in the Clothworkers' Centenary Concert Hall on campus:

I've never used it, but yes there is:

... prospective customers could browse the online catalogue to see if it's got the sort of stock they want*. Good call, 8Ob.

EDIT: * = Err; no, you can't! I've just tried and you get a general Oxfam Book site, not one specific to this individual shop.

Aye, twas a sad day indeed when Graham and Terry shut up shop - many a lunch hour I was late back to my job round the corner at Barker's by spending too much time in their old Albion Street shop - probably my most enjoyable record-buying period..

Thanks for the tip re lunchtime concerts fg; as it happens, it is a Friday - I'm not sure offhand when her interview finishes but I'll certainly check it out.

If that doesn't work out, Kirkgate market does sound good (and looks interesting on its website too), so that plus the Art Gallery should keep me out of trouble for a couple of hours
