    LSO Play

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but the LSO, as part of its 'Discovery' programme, has launched:

The health warning is that (i) the first work they've recorded is Ravel's Bolero; and (ii) the screen devoted to the conductor features Valery Gergiev - a real small-child frightener of an experience. It'll be interesting to see what follows but, good on my favourite orchestra for its enterprise.

Pretty impressive use of the technology, and the audio is a not too bad 192kbps stereo AAC. I look forward to something a bit less overplayed than Bolero. Unlike some here, I do rather like the work, but ...

[Hmm, may have posted a bit too soon re. use of technology. My top right window has got stuck on loading now. Ahh, just got 'em all back.]

The Philharmonia created something similar with a performance of Holst The Planets conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, which was on display at The Science Museum in London last year. The many screens in different rooms emphasised different instrument groups, there was a camera showing us the leader's eye view and another from the back desks, etc. The exhibition appeared to be very popular (I went three times - it was free ). I believe that it toured other parts of the country over the following year.

But great idea and yes, Bolero was the first piece of classical music that I 'learned' aged 8, from a big LP box that my father bought from The Reader's Digest
