Hmm!! "faltering" under Haymarket, well what do you know!! Whose fault is that then! As for "returning to its roots" under "family run ownership"?? What are those roots then? When I was a subscriber for some 30+ years, before giving up its dumbing down, it was by and large a reliable, informative and intelligent journal with reviewers whose authority and approach was clear. That is its roots.
It has to be said that the context of those roots is no longer in place because the market has moved on very significantly and the readership of yore perhaps does not share the same aesthetic. Neverthless the timeless values of authority, intelligence and reliability surely remain? It will never be a mass circulation journal and so its profitability [if that what the owners want] will depend on value for the cover price.
When it started to brush up its image the rot set in straight away because it undervalued its core market trying to attract new readers [a perceived commercial need I suppose] with a flashy new image that appealed to no one but ts management consultants. Can't think where I have heard that intention lately?

Obviously decided to get something for The Gramophone rather than wait until its worth nothing.....
Also (sorry for OT) has it been noticed on the same site - Catherine Bott is heading for Classic FM (10 October) ?

One can only wait and see... HiFiNews was bought (from iPC) by a smaller more specialised house a couple of years ago and is currently in something of a golden age! It only did it good... New G. just arrived ("Mozart's Final Year - Masterpieces and Myths" on the cover) but haven't opened it yet... I always stuck by it but when I read Philip Clark's appalling and brief (single-paragraph!) dismissal of Venzago's fascinating re-think of Bruckner 6 last month I was truly dismayed. Still have a draft letter to send to them when time allows...

The recent 'Awards' issue contained three howlers.
1). There was a picture of three people. Two were identified as Ronald Kinloch Anderson, Dame Janet Baker and AN Other who happened to be the late Sir Alex Gibson. Amazing no one could identify him.
2). The Dvorak 'cello concerto is in b minor - not d minor!
3). A new cd of Lennox Berkeley's music for solo violin and and violin and piano named the violinist as Edwin Paley and not Edwin Paling, long term leader of the RSNO.
And since I'm on my soap box, the Friday 'Times' had a review of the Brahms second piano that insisted (3 times!). that it was in Eb Major and not Bb Major.
