    Radio 3 reaches its nadir

I have just come across this - if it wasn't October I would have thought it was an April Fool .

If this is what Tony hall meant when he was planning to introduce young people to classical music - words fail me.http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/ne...r-radio-3.html

In the 1990s French and Saunders treated this is a satirical joke on crossover albums - now it has become a " good idea" on Radio 3 .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR8Pfqe2Js4

It reminds me of Dads Dancing Badly at Weddings kind of embarrassment. Every self-respecting 'young person' should / will be sniggering in droves as they reach for the sick bucket.

Who the hell is coming up with crap like this?

        Crap heads!

I see there is a charity fund-raising element to 'justify' this.

        ............so that's alright then.

The winner will be the track that sells the most copies.
The loser? That will be all of us.

I think it's a case of what goes around comes around ... when I was but a small ginger my dad had loads of cassettes of the *insert name of posh sounding orchestra* doing 'classical' versions of contemporary hits.

Hooked On Classics was a dreadful concept but at least that was a commercial undertaking - who is being informed , educated or entertained here ?

                  Than what ?
This does look a bit naff
BUT........ why do people think it's an attempt to "introduce" young people to "classical" music ?

It doesn't seem like that at all
just a rather predictable popularist wheeze to get some dosh for Children In Need

                  and

We have already had the "nadir"

Yes, I saw that somewhere. An excited press release if I remember. I thought we'd just had Children in Need.

This is Roger's idea, I suppose, as per the film music season[sic (sic)]: "In this short season, attention has helpfully been drawn to Radio 3 across a wide spectrum of BBC audiences who would not be natural listeners to the station..."

Is there anyone at the BBC, wearily asking "Why?"

(NB French and Saunders were intending to be laughable.)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I agree. I've already had this argument with someone. It's another publicity stunt. That's all.

                        Indeed

I know () the kinds of things Tony Hall has supported to involve young people in music
and this is a fair way from those IMV

Just when you think it is impossible for R3 to sink any lower

The Dear Leader and his cronies have now clearly lost whatever marbles they had left. Is there a clause whereby they can be removed on grounds of insanity?

I don't see any reason to get upset - it's Children in Need and is spread equally across all the BBC platforms. I cannot remember exactly what Radio 3 did last year but it was equally cringeworthy (probably Tom Service in a Mozart wig spouting nonsense)
Two weeks after the event everyone will have forgotten about it
