Not going to be able to have a first live look-hear at Andris Nelsons tomorrow evening...

Just arrived home to this:

"Thank you for booking to see the Philharmonia Orchestra on Thursday 10 October at 7.30pm and / or Sunday 13 October at 7.30pm. Please note that unfortunately Andris Nelsons has sadly had to withdraw from both concerts due to a viral flu infection. The Philharmonia Orchestra is most grateful to Hannu Lintu and Jac van Steen who will take his place on 10 and 13 October respectively.

Hannu Lintu is Chief Conductor Designate of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, and Principal Guest Conductor of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin. Internationally renowned Dutch conductor Jac van Steen is General Music Director of the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera Theatre Dortmund, and previously held posts at the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Staatskapelle Weimar.

The programme on 10 October remains unchanged as follows:

Anyone know anything about Hannu Lintu?

That's jolly bad luck on Maestro Nelsons and on all those had paid to see him.

I have personal experience of seeing Maestro van Steen and I think he's good value - I've seen him work with BBC NOW and with students at London's Royal Academy of Music. He struck me as a good conductor and one whom I would be happy to pay money to see.

Maestro Lintu is still a closed book for me but I hope you'll be able to tell us how things go later on this week

That's a good thing. Nelsons has always struck me as a bit of a grinner...

He withdrew from the Philharmonia concert at Oxford last Thursday (Jac van Steen took over), so that's a whole week off work. Bet Helene is pleased - she wouldn't have wanted a sloppy viral kiss from Andris after the concerto.

I did remark on another thread, when it became clear that he willl leave the CBSO at the end of 2014/15 season, that his health is suffering as he tries to cope with being such a hot property.

If the RFH is like Symphony Hall a credit or refund is out of the question. Anyway you've still got the Gallic Powerhouse to look forward to

Nelsons' health problems are a becoming an increasing cause for concern. He is clearly working far too hard and in this kind of situation something somewhere has to give.

In the good old bad old days you never found out about a cancellation or change of artist until you were in the hall. I recall booking for an LPO concert in 1980 where Sir Georg Solti was down to conduct the Bruckner 5. Booked train tickets, hotel room, a couple of days off work and arrived at the RFH to be confronted by a notice saying Solti was unwell and his place was taken by Jesus Lopez Cobos and the programme changed to Mozart PC 25 and Bruckner 7. It was a crushing disappointment and I left at the interval and came home.

Up to you whether or not you return your tickets. Living in London at least gives you scope to slip away without being too much out of pocket.

I drew attention to the substitution when I got home from the concert last Friday. (Zuccchini possibly confusing his/her days!) Still a great concert though.

VodkDilk: You did but afraid I didn't see it. The promotor, Music at Oxford tweeted on Monday to draw attention to an excellent review of van Steen on BachTrack of 'Friday's concert'! My mistake. Googleable if you're interested

Hannu Lintu records mainly for ONDINE, specialising in new or recent music. You may be familiar with his Naxos RSNO CD of RAUTAVAARA'S CANTUS ARCTICUS, but he's also made two discs of KAIJA SAARIAHO's orchestral works (now edited into a lovely mauve & white box set) and a CD of RASMUSSEN's little-known Symphony No.1, "OCEANIC DAYS", this one for Da Capo. I've enjoyed them all hugely, but as for his BRAHMS... it MIGHT be a revelation... or just...

To my surprise Nelsons did show up on Sunday and conduct Elektra (no less) at Covent Garden. I'd gone along fully expecting an announcement from the stage... Very good it was too, particularly orchestrally, and he seemed to be his usual fairly demonstrative self.

It's certainly a great pity, if rather inevitable that he will be moving on from the CBSO. His current schedule is pretty manic so it's hardy a wonder if he's run down and been told to rest to recuperate properly from the nasty flu thing that's doing the rounds.

Thanks jayne and Simon B - yes it was the 'fairly demonstrative' AN that I was somewhat fearful of... Some Brahms hewn from Nordic granite might be just the ticket. We shall see in less than 12 hours!

Frankly I would be very surprised if, on application, a promoter did not refund the full price of admission.
