Steve Reich's 'Different Trains'. Mrs. PG and I heard it played once In Bruges and just loved it but have never heard of it being done again.

Bruges has a lovely pair of concert halls. Superb.

I last heard it live in 1969, played beautifully by the much-lamented Iona Brown, when I was in the BBCSSO.
The world's greatest classical music festival - stunning performances and collaborations.

I've managed three of these. Heard Henze's Symphonies 8 & 9 at the Proms (he gave a pre-Prom talk on the 8th), two works by Rihm (Dis Kontur and In-Schrift both under Abbado) and also Glanert's Shoreless River.

Rihm: Gesungene Zeit. My goodness, the violin is above the stratosphere almost throughout and the effect in a concert hall must be amazing. Hopeless on radio or CD IMO

Sorry to be a party-pooper, but the mere existence on a forthcoming concert programme of most of the interesting works mentioned in this thread would be sufficient to ensure a sparsely populated hall.

Possibly - which may be why they're not programmed - which is why we'd "love to hear them performed Live". (The absence of a anyone in the seats around us isn't really an issue in this fantasy world.)

                    well perhaps. And perhaps not.

There are plenty of core repertoire concerts at top venues in London that fail to sell strongly. Tickets at all prices available for the Nelson's Brahms at the RFH this week. £40 and £9 seats available , and everything in between.

And some people will turn up just to see one work , and then leave at the interval.

So: perhaps some slightly more ambitious programming might pay dividends. Fortune favours the brave.
And there must be examples of those with an adventurous outlook doing well. Kronos? Arditti? Ok I know they are chamber groups, but they do well, as do the Brodskis , who I think are fairly adventurous.

But others will know better than I do about the effect of more adventurous programming on ticket sales.
And a question. Do American orchestras tend o be more adventurous, especially with contemporary pieces?

                      Not necessarily at all
it all depends on how these things are programmed
a festival of seldom performed music is a great idea
the wonderful folks at STEIM in Amsterdam had a series of events exploring Niche musics a few years ago
and Sonic Arts Network (now part of Sound & Music ..........other acronyms are available ) has run many things like Cut & Splice, Expo etc which have similar content all well attended

pastoralguy, you prompted me to google JG which led me to his entertaining and well constructed website. I remember him as the swashbuckling LSO leader in the 1970s but lost track of him after that. I did write to Faber to point out that he was missing from the index of Richard Morrison's lively biog of the LSO, and received a charming reply promising to correct it.

OT, I'd love to hear a performance of Tallis's Spem in alium under the lantern of a great English cathedral, if anyone knows of one coming up I'd be grateful for the tip.

Many thanks again to Simon B for letting me know about the performance of Harris's 9th Symphony in Cardiff. I've now booked my ticket for the 19th November, accommodation and travel for a probable once in a lifetime opportunity to hear this work live. As I've never been to Cardiff if any fellow Boarders from the area are around to show me the sights I would be greatly appreciative.
