Not sure if any or all of these transgress the rules, but here goes:

    Alex North, Sparticus
Bernard Hermann Vertigo, Psycho, Taxi Driver
    Jerry Goldsmith Chinatown, L.A. Confidential
Henry Mancini, Touch of Evil, The Pink Panther
    Nino Rota, The Godfather

I'm uncertain if Paul Simon's score for The Graduate came before or after the songs were released, but it's a great score.

I think I may be the only one that does not have a clue where this enterprise is going. As I am completely lost, I'll keep quiet.

Have " Future Sound of London" done any film music, BTW?
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

                All add mine
Of Mice & Men (1939 vers) - Copland
                Our Town - Copland
The Heiress - Copland (he got an oscar for this)
                The Red Pony - Copland
On the Waterfront - L Bernstein
                Hamlet - Walton
                Richard III - Walton
The First of the few - Walton
                49th Parallel - Vaughan Williams
The Loves of Joanna Godden - Vaughan Williams
                Flemish Farm - Vaughan Williams

The Inn of the 6th Happiness - Arnold

The Battle of Britain may be problematical with most of it being by Ron Goodwin, with the fantastic Battle in the Air section of Walton, perhaps I should list it twice one with each composer?
                Some great music there sc

Oh, you're not alone. I think it's going where no man has gone before.

                  Boldly.

Ok I've compiled a list of 200 films, from boarders choices and some research, hopefully they cover enough of a range to keep as many of you happy as possible.

I'll set a new thread up shortly for the vote.

Category sprawl ... that's what happens when you get to films. My go's
Hermann: 1) Vertigo and 2) The Day the Earth Stood Still
                      3) Walton: Henry V
                      4) Rota: The Godfather
                      5) Barry: You only live twice
                      6) Mancini: Charade
                      7) Karas: The Third Man
                      8) Joplin: The Sting
                      9)WA Mozart: Amadeus
                      10)Carter Burwell: Fargo

In the line of no. 9 I could have put "Rachmaninov: Brief Encounter" ... but I've done enough driving people crazy this weekend.

That does seem to be the solution, with both versions being available on the DVD. But even then, there is no Goodwin-only option.

I'm still thinking about my selection, there are some favourite films there like All About Eve - but for the life of me I cannot remember the music so don't wish to vote for the film rather than the music.

[Edit: YouTube is a good way to refresh the memory re soundtracks]

Good tip Anna, yes a lot from the voting list are on You Tube, so plenty of opportunity to refresh your memories before voting.

Gabriel's Oboe (from The Mission) by Morricone, is something I'm asked to play frequently. It has even found its way to the ABRSM oboe exam syllabus form 2014 onwards.

Quite a beautiful piece, but it does sound as though it's a variation on Praise my Soul, the King of Heaven.

I'm unsticking and closing this thread as the vote has started and this list is closed. If you want to vote for something that isn't already on the list, you can leave it to Suffy to decide what to do with it - but not being on the main list means it's unlikely to get very high on the final list.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
