    The alternative film music list

Going through a couple of threads, I've dug out 28 possibles. But being iggerant, and not even a film-goer, I may have misunderstood some things. I've limited it to one entry per composer. Some may be obscure, but I think it will work if we have a poll where you can vote for - how many? 5 or 10? Then have a second poll of the top suggestions. I think it's quite a good exercise. But first we need a final list. Any on the list that should be dumped? Or must be added?

    No lengthy discussions.

    Erich Wolfgang Korngold: Sea Hawk
Franz Waxman: The Bride of Frankenstein
Bernard Herrmann: North by North West
Dmitri Tiomkin: The Fall of the Roman Empire
    Malcolm Arnold: Hobson's Choice
    Dmitri Shostakovich: Hamlet
    Morton Feldman: Something Wild
Carl Stalling Warner Bros.Cartoons, 1936-1958 – choose a particular one?
    Arthur Bliss: Things To Come
    Michel Legrand: The Go-Between
    Miles Davis: Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud
    Virgil Thomson: Louisiana Story
    Georges Delarue: Jules et Jim
Nino Rota: Eight and a half
    John Barry: The Ipcress File
Richard Rodney Bennett: Far From the Madding Crowd
    Roy Budd: Get Carter
    Basil Poledouris: Conan The Barbarian
Ennio Morricone For a few dollars more
    William Walton: Henry V
Alfred Newman: How the West was Won
    Ernest Gold: Exodus
    Jerry Goldsmith: Basic Instinct
    Hans May: Brighton Rock
    James Bernard: She
John Addison: The Charge of the Light Brigade
Ralph Vaughan William: Scott of the Antarctic
    Sergei Prokofiev: Alexander Nevsky
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think we should let everyone choose their own list in order, we'd get a much bigger variety and get a true list of members favourite film scores, of those above only 4 or 5 would be in my top ten.

These are everyone's choices. I only left out things I wasn't sure about. The idea would be that, in the poll you would vote for your top 5 or 10. But I don't see how you can do it if everyone has a separate list. You can add what you like to this one.

I can just keep adding them to a spreadsheet and put their positions in the members top 10 into a formula for the calculations.

Yes, can you add everyone's new suggestions? If anything isn't proper 'film music' it can be removed.

[Btw, Star Wars came second in Classic FM's poll last month - Howard Shore, Lord of the Rings came top.]

I've just investigated - for the poll we can only have 10 options, so somehow we have to arrive at a shortlist of 10 films.

Yes with no problems I should think. Howard Shore's score is vastly superior to Star Wars IMHO.

Having 10 leads the responses in a certain direction, hence why the bbc poll is even more unrepresentative. The wider the better, then its truly representative, another plus point over the bbc poll.

Here's a list of long-standing personal favourites. They all have very good tunes (or strong musical themes) as well as well crafted scores that adapt well into concert suites:

                      Miklos Rosza: Ben-Hur
                      Nino Rota: Romeo & Juliet
                      RVW: The Invaders (49th Parallel)
                      John Barry: Zulu
                      Mikis Theadorakis: Zorba the Greek
Howard Shore: The Lords of the Rings
                      Bernard Herrman: Psycho
                      Randy Edelman: Gettysburg
                      Arthur Bliss: Things To Come
                      Nino Rota: The Godfather

I made a list yesterday and everything I put on it has been covered so far except:

                        Jerome Moross: The Big Country

Most of my favourites have been mentioned, though I'd like to add:-

                            Walton: First of the Few
                            Jarre: Doctor Zhivago
                            Ellmer Bernstein: The Ten Commandments

Dr Z. made such an impression on me, when the film was released, that I bought a balalaika from Reno's in Manchester and taught myself to play it.
