Quite the best performance of the Tchaikovsky that I have heard in years. Anyone else think like me that the 3rd movement is quite the best movement that Tchaikovsky wrote?

Quite the best performance of the Tchaikovsky that I have heard in years. Anyone else think like me that the 3rd movement is quite the best movement that Tchaikovsky wrote?

Personally I think the 1st & 4th movements are the best movements Tchaikovsky wrote, along with the 1st movement of the 4th Symphony. The trouble with the 3rd movement of the 6th Symphony is that Proms audiences applaud at the end of it. Manchester audiences are generally the best behaved in the world.

The first movement of the 4th comes a very close second for me.

There was no applause between the movements on Thursday. When there is no applause, the sob at the beginning of the 4th movement highlights just how brash and hollow the jollity of the 3rd movement is. You are quite right to say that Manchester audiences are the best behaved in the world. Indeed they don't applaud until the conductor lowers his hands. Mark Elder didn't lower his hands until a least 15 seconds at the end at this concert. The sadness in the music was palpable and you could hear a pin drop for those 15 seconds.

The only time I have heard applause between movements in Manchester was at a NYO concert and I think that that was because parents and friends wanted show their pride in the youngsters performance.

A lesson for R3, AjAjAjH. Perhaps all Proms 2011 programmes, discussions, promotions, trailers, posters should include the line, "It ain't over till the conductor lowers his hands". It might even replace references to a certain fat ladies still in common usage. In fact, I shall change my signature. Thanks.

Mr Eldar must like Sibelius I see he's doing it qt the proms this year. There's usually an all Sibelius concert in the Halle season.
