Er, not quite as enthusiastic as David Nice, verismissimo. There's no doubt Schwanewilms has a terrific voice, as I suggested in my opening post, but I thought there was rather too much "weighing the significance of every note", as Nice put it, resulting in the line of the song being broken up at times. I don't think I've heard an opening In der Fremde taken so slowly; the clouds arriving from the homeland illuminated by lightning flashes can rarely have moved so sluggishly And in the final song I thought exultation was somewhat muted. But some of the songs were beautifully done, and the singer was always sensitively accompanied by Roger Vignoles. I'd like to hear the recital again on Saturday when it's repeated. But anyway, it's so good to hear the work performed when so many singers tend to choose Dichterliebe.
