Which pianists do you prefer in this or that repertoire?

    Hello,

Sokolov is a new pianist to me and I have been working through his discs on Naive of live recordings. I like his Chopin, his Beethoven, but his Brahms Ballades really don't penetrate the works like Michelangeli (DG).

Which pianist do you like in certain repertoire? Who do you turn to for Schubert, Bach, Chopin?

I'll start with a first few:

    Brahms - Ballades - Michelangeli
Beethoven - Arrau, Gilels, Pollini, Solomon, Sokolov
Chopin - Etudes - Pollini (but a Gavilov disc is also special)
Chopin - Preludes - Francois, Solokov (v. special live disc!)
Debussy - Preludes, Images - Michelangeli
    Ravel - Louis Lortie

      Schubert: Radu Lupu, Clifford Curzon
Chopin: Vlado Perlemuter, Youra Guller, Murray Perahia
Bach: no comment - he wrote nothing for the piano..

I understand purist antipathy on this point but... Bach was an innovator, worked on early fortepiano models, wrote for new instruments. One can't help thinking he would approve of his 'clavier-ubung' on the latest incarnation of the clavier.

Exactly! Angela Hewitt or Murray Perahia for me in Bach.

Schubert: Alfred Brendel. His 1971 recording of D.960 obsessed me when the LP first came out, I couldnt get the music out of my head for weeks.

Bach: Glenn Gould. In fact, Gould playing anything.

I suggest Wilhelm Kempff and Emil Gilels as alternatives in Brahms Ballades.

This 'live' recording of Michelangeli is pretty stunning too ...

Critics have tended to described his playing as 'glacial' and suchlike but here's a chance at times to watch his face as you might in a concert - it's all going on under the surface.

I like Schiff in some Bach but not all. His early Decca WTC I like, but his Partitas seem inconsistent in tempo/pulse (BWV 825 )

Argerich is astounding of course but even recently Yuja Wang and Daniil Trifonov have put in outstanding performances

What a wonderful world we live in

Glenn Gould. My favourite Hammerklavier. Bach, Hindemith, Berg and so on.
