I was listening to a recent Sony reissue of Emil Gilel's recordings. Many of these large reissues are fantastic bargains but they have omitted any kind of notes about the music. In most cases I can live with this, as I have other recordings of the most of these items and can read those notes if I wish, but this reissue features a work that I know nothing about: Shostakovich Piano Sonata #2, Op. 61.
It is an interesting piece, written during WWII, but the Wikipedia entry on it is two sentences long and I would like to know more about it.The other Google entries are plugging various recordings. I have read two biographies of the composer but have not retained them and I don't remember ever reading about this work.
I am also transferring a lot of my collection to a hard drive to save shelf space, and will have to part with the liner notes. Since most of the music of the music that I am putting on the HD is off the beaten track, I would like a good online reference to consult when I listen to these in the future.
I will ante up for a source such as Grove if need be, but of course free is always better. Any suggestions?
