Two sopranos who brought radiance and a feeling of something special to their stage performances or recordings.

Lucia Popp (1939 -1993) and Meta Seinemayer who died trgically young at the age of 34 in
1929. Listening to her recordings, I don't think I have ever heard such piercingly beautiful top notes.

Re Ginette Neveu - I've just found a really old cassette I made - GN playing Chausson Poeme,
Debussy Violin Sonata, Ginette and Jean, and the famous recording of the Brahms Concerto.

I can't get either of my tape recorders to work, although the CDs do on these machines.

        What a shame.

        SORRY slightly off topic.

Since the net has now been thrown widely enough to encompass composers, I must mention THOMAS LINLEY the younger (1756–1778), greatly admired by Mozart, who sadly drowned in a boating accident aged only 22.

How "old" is "too young"? Tessa Bonner died at the very height of her considerable powers when she was 57 - Andrew Parrott wrote a particular moving Obituary:

as a writer rather than performer, Buddy Holly.

What music he would have made .

Has anyone mentioned Amy Winehouse? A wonderful singer/ songwriter.

                  Oh, and Mozart!

A loss to me and many, Ginette Neveu and her brother, killed in a plane crash. I remember how the BBC repeated parts of her Brahms Vln Concerto in every news bulletin for some days,or so it seemed.

EDIT. Ihad to look up the dates, I know I had recently seen her play. It was back in 1949 and she was only 30 years old. Her brother Jean[?] was also killed.

I know this is really morbid but I've often wondered what happened to the remains of her Stradivarius. And for that matter, Jacques Thibaud's Stradivarius who died in a plane crash aged 73. Ok, not 'young' but ahead of his time.

                        Sam Cooke.

Great singer AND a great songwriter.

Freddie Mercury. 22 years ago and my eyes still well up thinking about such a great loss. Only 45 years of age and one of the greatest.

Glenn Gould - no words necessary.

Richie Valens was about 17 years old IIRC....
