    Happy Birthday, Janet Baker

A visit to the Presto Classical website informed me that I'd missed Dame Janet's 80th birthday, yesterday. One of my favourite singers, and the finest I've heard Live - to paraphrase André Previn said on one of his Christmas Music Night Specials back in the '70s, "I can think of no better present than to hear Janet Baker sing":

Dame Janet Baker sings Richard Strauss' beautiful lied 'Morgen'.

        Belated happy returns
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Can you believe that youtube doesn't carry Dame Janet's bootleg recording of the Britten arrangement of A Pig's foot and a bottle of beer?!

If SK was at her simpering best (worst?) I think I'll give it a miss. Good DLD podcast and also one with JJ on the Gramophone website to hear JB at her best.

When she announced her retirement from singing far too many years ago, I felt not only dismayed but indignant and it was all that I could do not to write a letter of complaint to her to ask how she dare do such a terrible thing. A most wonderful artist. I hope that she is enjoying her life - she richly deserves to - but ours are the more impoverished for her having put that voice away for good...

Happy Birthday Janet. Her performances of Bach have always stuck in my memory.

I wonder if Dame Janet knows how privileged she is to share her birthday not only with sprinter Usain Bolt but also with my now 12-yr old daughter?

She would be very welcome to pop in for our Birthday Barbie on Monday - Usain unfortunately couldn't make it...
