What I cannot understand is why the number changes suddenly at Pevensey, when the road is clearly the same one to Bexhill, Hastings and beyond.

point taken - I would guess the A259 (which incidentally doesn't stop when it meets the A27, but makes a southerly turn) is the older road, it certainly looks it. I don't know when the A27 was built, it looks newer. If they'd renumbered the A259 from Pevensey right back to Folkestone all the maps, road signs etc. would have had to be altered.

Well, considering that roads in France can suddenly change number without warning merely because one has unwittingly crossed a departmental boundary, I shouldm't complain. and I don't : I was just curious. Also, there has been a wholesale renumbering of routes nationales in the last few years. I guarantee your Michelin map will be out of date within a week of printing.

I hadn't spotted your quite correct point about the A259 - it goes through Eastbourne along the coast all the way to Chichester and possibly beyond. So the A27 just fizzles out.

By the way - why Chichester, somebody asks. I wouldn't want to cast any aspersions about a forum member's age, but it is undeniably true that as one ages, the thought of living nearer an A&E or stroke unit is comforting, and that means an urban life.

Alain, you need to do more research on your NHS Trusts. Chichester has an excellent A&E: St Richard's Hospital. It is also, as Forum members know, endowed with one of the country's leading provincial theatres; has a spectacular Norman cathedral (in which in 1989, I was fortunate enough to hear Richter give a recital on one of his rare UK visits); well preserved Roman walls; largely intact Georgian city; nestling in the foot of the glorious South Downs; with its own capacious yacht basin.
