    An Irritating New Practice

I have recently noticed that the DAB scrolling display for Radio 3 has started to name composers librarian-fashion, surname first, given name second. Today I listened to a piece by Debussy, Claude on the way home. I don't know of any Debussys the composer could possibly have been confused with.
Am I alone in finding this new style exceptionally pompous and irritating?
I notice the same practice has not been extended to the likes of Cowan,Rob or Rafferty Sean. However I wonder how long before it creeps into announcers' scripts?
Is anyone else as annoyed by this as I am?

Hello and welcome, Back Desk! I don't have DAB so can't say about that one exactly, but I do have an unreasoning dislike of the ordinary playlists that tell you first names and second names (and middle names if they have them) of all the composers, no matter how often the names appear or how well-known they are. We can never just say 'Tchaikovsky' these days because it's all computerised and computers are like that.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Yees ... but remember that there are more people appearing on the planet all the time, some of them will be composers and some might have the same surname as existing well-known composers. Just at the moment I only know of one Debussy and that is Claude, but tomorrow I might hear of Marcel Debussy, a rising star of modern French music. Then R3 will have two Debussys to deal with and will need to differentiate between them.

Of course, I just made up Marcel Debussy for the sake of argument, but that doesnt mean either that he cannot exist, or even that he does exist and I just havent heard of him.

It may seem a bit obsessive to insist on such apparently un-necessary accuracy, but I am a scientist and I like it.

        Smalley
        Stockhausen
        Bach
        Prokofiev
        Panufnik
        Adams
        Ligeti

        and so on
I can think of many composers who share their names
        some are related
some not ............ there are two James Taylor's
I once made the mistake of buying an album by the strummer rather than the B3 player
