I liked the very beginning...
btw Sorry GG to have misled you about smileys earlier. ff's email was not up to her usual high standards of clarity.
Or I failed to read it properly.
Take your pick.

I don't think this place is cliquey at all . There may be people whom others perceive as a clique simply because they tend to hold similar opinions to each other and hence come out in support on a thread but I can never be sure in advance of what an individual is likely to say on a topic - for example I would never have expected to find that salymap can't stick the Franck symphony or that Hornspieler does not rate the Rachmaninov second or that fhgl has a lightning shaped scar on his forehead - but this forum is full of surprises - not always delightful surprises but always surprises - now I must go and listen to some Messaien - this seems like an afternoon for the Quartet for the End of Time...

My understanding of "cliquey" is slightly broader than the one defined earlier - an atmosphere where the occasional or newer poster feels slightly uncomfortable/left out/excluded even though this is not the intention of the regulars or hosts, who are mostly very welcoming. I don't think this was the case on the BBC boards, because there were always people coming and going. This board is more of a backwater, and it was always likely that it would come to be dominated by a small, dedicated group. The Proms is the best time for the occasional poster, like me, to contribute, because things open up a lot more. At other times, a lot of threads do seem to consist of one-liners between members who know each other's likes and dislikes well - these can be dispiriting and off-putting. I'm not throwing accusations around, just observing.
However, on politics, I do broadly agree with Simon's point that there is a group who tend to gang up on/throw mud at anyone who posits a right-wing view. My politics are broadly left-wing, but this does fit the "cliquey" charge in my view.
