That bl**dy 'An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise' by Peter Maxwell Davies using that hackneyed them of a wedding celebration that becomes more raucous as the alcohol takes hold. I feel like strangling that Scots piper. I enjoyed it the first time I saw it performed Peter Maxwell Davies was conducting the BBC Phil in the BBC's Manchester studio 7 but to hear it again over and over again drives me to near distraction.
Once too often......

I spent my working life listening to musicians talking about music and usually they did the talking.
The only comment I will make on Beetn 9 - I don't want some long works like Schubert's Great C major to finish. With the Beethoven I can't wait for the last movement to end. Sorry,my loss no doubt.
If I ever find the time I intend putting that right.
Before I joined this forum I didn't realise there were so many people who don't much care for the finale of LvB 9,I thought it was just me,don't feel so bad now.

Rob I gave upthe piano too soon. I enjoyed lessons but circumstances - losing a big house in the blitz so my piano was in the way in a bungalow- travel to London and tiring jobs- comparing myself with the great pianists I heard.
Still we can't all get to the top, where would their audience come from ?

Since Dudamel's Prom with the Simon Bolivar Youth(sic) Orchestra, even the local village orchestra seems to want to have a go at it.
For me, one of the composer's least impressive works, but I could enjoy #1,5,6,8 and 9 as often as you would like to play them.

Shostakovitch #10 of course! (Not to mention the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto)
(EDIT: Last thoughts)
Whilst touching on the Proms, surely "The Rite of Spring" has been totally over exposed over the last two years.
Could we not have Le Chant du Rosignol, Symphony in C, Apollon Musagète, Danses concertantes to celebrate the life of this great Russian Composer?

I presume that works like Shostakovich 10 are programmed by youth orchestras because the forces can be very large and everybody gets the chance of a bash.
The Rite has certainly been over exposed, but for rather more than the last two years, still tomorrow's performance promises to be interesting as a 'period' instrument version. It probably won't be long before 'period' reaches the 1940s!
I absolutely agree about Apollo etc. I keep raiding the splendid box with Stravinsky and Craft conducting. Many of these works would be ideal for late night Proms, there was a first rate Soldier's Tale a few years back, but nothing much since.
