Quatuor Danel's complete cycle of the string quartets of Mieczyslaw Weinberg in his centenary year. There are 7 concets over 4 days at the Martin Harris Centre, Manchester University - lunchtime and evening 24-26 Jan, plus lunchtime on 27 Jan. The quartet will be playing his works in chronological order and end with David Fanning joining in a performance of the Piano Quintet (a very moving work comparable with those of Shostakovich and Schnittke). I believe that there are plenty of tickets left (the hall is rarely more than a third full) and the Thursday and Friday lunchtime concerts are free!

Except visitors now preclude me from going; but there is a similar concert by Exaudi, from a festival in Royaument last September, on France Musique tonight (8th Jan)

Decisions, decisions. Friday sees two London events featuring the work of Strach Orchestra composers. At Cafe OTO, Michael Parsons at 80, and the one I have committed to attending (and recording), a Cardew Foundation cncert at Morley College. Hopefully I will eventually get the oportunity of listening to an in-house recording of the former. A most unfortunate clash of events.

I’ve bought a ticket for Quartets 10,11 and 12 on the Saturday afternoon,hoping to get to at least one of the free ones too.

Domestic acousmatics from Manuella Blackburn at City University, or new works using thematic material intended by Bach for use in the incomplete Orgelbüchlein (BBC Singers at St Peter's, Eaton Square). I think the Manuella Blackburn will win out.
