Xerxes (for that was last night's opera) was well sung - Clint van der Linde an excellent countertenor I hadn't come across before, though Julia Riley in the title role was rather quiet and I was glad to be sitting near the front - but the practice of updating everything to WW2 is becoming a bit of a cliche, and a spitfire does not provide as much shade as a plane tree.
Glad you got there Ok, sounds like it was worth the effort.

Totally forgotten I'd applied for a ticket for the following concert but this is a problem with sending off for tickets a year or more in advance. Saw it listed as being broadcast on R3 in the latest BBC Music Magazine and thought 'I'm sure I have a ticket for this'...

Turnage: Remembering In Memoriam Evan Scofield (world premiere)
                Mahler: Symphony No 6

                London Symphony Orchestra
                Sir Simon Rattle

In the Barbican on January 19 2017.

Something to look forward to in the post-Christmas gloom. It's Rattle's 62nd birthday as well.

Anybody going to be in the virtual queue for Rattle's 2018 concerts at the RFH with the BPO?

I quite fancy the second one , but it's a long way ahead to book and not cheap, unless you are in the back few rows.

"Before and After" - they say, "Canteen's committed to honest food that's nationally sourced, skilfully made and fairly priced, unlike our tickets”

Arm and a leg job (I suppose you’d get the second ticket at a half-price concession with your blue badge after your arm and leg have gone).

Jokes aside, I think £125 is a bit steep. We need a new venue in London to provide some competition and drive prices down to 90p.

if you have 90 p to waste , I'd suggest putting it towards a copy of the Guardian and have a really good laugh at the utter ***** in their article about the same concerts.

This Friday at the Barbican: BBCSO/Oramo play Shostakovich 10 and a new fiddle concerto by Michael Zev Gordon. Last time I heard this conductor and orchestra, in Nielsen 4, it was very exciting indeed.
