    Hooray!!
Hold on! You can get tickets for Tchaikovsky - but not for Feldman???!!!

I think I've slipped into a parallel universe.

I quite like the decor here.

Well London is a sophisticated, cultured, diverse city - it’s why Richard Barrett goes to the trouble of putting on gigs here

Incidentally - is the the Tchaikovsky First Symphony (or the Pno Concerto)? The Symphony is one of my favourite works of his: great tunes, and a really good-natured feel to the whole work. The last (and first) time I heard it live was in the Congress Theatre in Eastbourne about thirty years ago, played by the LPO, when the audience consisted of me, about five other people, the Theatre Staff - and somebody's cat. I couldn't help thinking that if Tchaikovsky couldn't pull in the punters, it didn't matter that audiences were so small for Birtwistle.

I have just realised that once in the late 1970s and once in the early 1980s I went to a free concert at Maida Vale on a weekday afternoon. One of the concerts was definitely Tchaikovsky conducted by a Maltese looking bloke (my idiosyncratic thought at the time, I don’t think like that anymore) and must have been one of the first three symphonies. I don’t remember much about the other concert. I was not a classical music fan at the time, but always curious. I went on my own, probably because there was no way my mates at the time would come.

I didn't go for this one, it's not really up my street and I'm not sure what I'm doing on 12th. But if it gets to the day and you've still got a ticket (assuming you went for the usual 2), drop a line - might be free and in the mood!

We could catch a bus and you could demonstrate your conducting skills!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I always go for 1 ticket (despite the nasty rumours, I’m very socially conscious). And funny enough, I will be getting the bus, but without the pouf

Well if I'm up for it, I might try my technique of turning up at 1.45 and loitering hopefully. Might see you there (I'll look out for the knitting needle then!)

Well I'm booked up for the Philip Glass Immersion day in January (which is my idea of heaven, but appreciate it can other's idea of hell!). Looking forward to hearing Itaipu live after years of hearing Robert Shaw's recording...

Surely it doesn’t take a day.

Re. Itaipu, my brain says I shouldn't like it, but whenever I’ve listened to it, I’ve always enjoyed it.

Fortunately a separate coach was provided for the people who would have got off at Tiverton, and after an agonising crawl through the outskirts of Taunton we made good speed on the M5 and got to St Davids station at about 6.15. A taxi got me to the theatre in time to sort myself out and persuade someone to look after my small rucksack.

Xerxes (for that was last night's opera) was well sung - Clint van der Linde an excellent countertenor I hadn't come across before, though Julia Riley in the title role was rather quiet and I was glad to be sitting near the front - but the practice of updating everything to WW2 is becoming a bit of a cliche, and a spitfire does not provide as much shade as a plane tree.

Why is it that the very idea of a Philip Glass Immersion Day prompts thought that throwing out the baby with the bath water might not be such a bad idea after all?

                                One might fondly hope so!

In the spirit of Stravinsky's "If Richard, then Wagner: if Strauss, then Johann", I would venture "if Philip, then Heseltine: if Glass, then Louis".
