I'm looking forward to going ( from my home in Dover, Kent) to Manchester (my home town) on Saturday 27th February 2016, to hear the Hallé under Mark Elder play Delius' Song of the High Hills' at the wonderful Bridgewater Hall.

        A wasted journey I'm afraid
because I read that Simon says there's nowhere in the UK with good acoustics

(watch out for the static carpets.... the technicians have special boots)

          Hmmm..../' Simon Says'....
          This is nonsense, surely?
I have not only 'played' ( in an orchestra) but have also conducted ( The Hanover Band) in the Bridgewater Hall and I prefer it to the Birmingham Hall!

I thought he said there's no hall in London with good acoustics? (Presumably meaning large halls.)

Croydon was the only one in London that passed muster in my concert-going lifetime. Do they still do that kind of thing? Does it still stand?

For choice, I go to Symphony Hall in Brum these days.

But I also go from time to time to the Sheldonian in Oxford: Renee Fleming in the Four Last Songs with the Oxford Philharmonic there, April 8.

And various forays to operas before that date...

A double dose of Angela Hewitt next weekend, here - a mixed recital on Saturday (Schubert, Beethoven, Haydn, Scarlatti, Albeniz, Falla) and the Goldberg (which I gather she's just re-recorded) on Sunday. I've been enjoying her new Scarlatti disc.

Does anybody know of a one stop shop for information on lunchtime concerts, both free and paid for, in London?
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

This is a question to which I am increasingly interested to know the answer!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

This is quite a treasure-trove of information.

Fridays seem to be a rich seam.
At least 4 I found tomorrow, at the Southbank, SMITF, St James Picadilly, and the RAM.

Thinking the RAM looks quite interesting, including the Barshai Chamber version of SQ 8.

Is it significant that it's inviting me to look for 'Plumbers and pizza in Chalfont St Giles' ?

Either way, it's not quite the 'specific one stop listing' that I think teamsaint, and certainly, I had in mind...

                              But thank you

The RAM and RCM are the places that over the years have had free events that I've most regretted missing - top flight conductors and instrumentalists working with the students. I've been to a couple (Haitink conducting Shostakovich 8 at the RCM being one unforgettable and ear-splitting occasion )
