Nielsen even better in concert! I was lucky to attend Rattles CBSO cycle at the Barbican in 1991ish (?). Awesome music!

Envy, envy, BeefO - superb concerts that I only heard from broadcasts: Rattle hasn't done anything better.

We heard a wonderful Concert last night. The program:

A Panufnik. Concerto in Stile Antico
Stravinsky Firebird Suite. 1919 Version
Tchaikovsky Polish Symphony

Muti led the Chicago SO

The Panufnik is a wonderful piece, a 7 movement Suite of Polish Baroque Music arranged for Trumpet and Orchestra. It sounds very Italian.
The Firebird was very well done. Muting was very animated during the Danse Infernale and during the last movement.
The Tchaikovsky was also well done. The most boring part the First Movement, was dispatched quickly, leaving more time enjoy the 3 delicious inner movements.

Bruckner 8 with Haitink and the LSO on the 23rd at the Barbican ... unmissable for me ... a near 400-mile round trip but a couple of nights accommodation at a club in lovely Cookham on the banks of the R. Thames to relax post-concert.

The Hallé concert on Thursday with Viktoria Mullova playing the Shostakovich first violin concerto and Ravel's complete Daphnis et Chloé. Sir Mark Elder is conducting. I can't wait to hear Mullova play as in recent seasons it has been rare for the Hallé to engage star soloists.

Hiya Richard, I've just noticed your post. Mullova was in top form. I enjoyed interviewing her in Dresden in 2013 prior to watching her performing a jazz set with her husband's combo.

Assuming that operas are allowed here I've just booked for both Moses in Egypt and William Tell at the Mayflower, Southampton, in the last week of November. There are reviews of both (at other venues) on the Night at the Opera board.

There are tickets at all prices still available, though decent seats with good sight of not only the stage but the surtitles too are now in limited supply.
