Well, thanks to on-forum help, I got to the Ashley Wass concert. It was absolutely staggering!
The Barber Sonata was a stunning showpiece, and worth the entrance money on its own.

If you get a chance to see him, don't miss the opportunity. Intense concentration and commitment to big-scale music, formidable technique, and self-deprecating manner. Real treasure.

Just persuaded OH that we need a few days in the Lake District in early August, so have booked for Stile Antico in Kendal and Wndermere (easier than getting to see them at the Wigmore!)

Just arrived in Leipzig ahead of tomorrow's concert by the Gewandhaus under Riccardo Chailly to mark Richard Strauss' 150th. Don Quixote and Till on the bill, along with a handful of orchestral songs from Matthias Goerne. Then, on Thursday, I'm at the general of Leipzig Opera's new Die Frau ohne Schatten. Yep, pretty excited.

I am off shortly to the East Neuk Festival, based in Crail in Fife. Six days of concerts with Sean Shibe, the Belcea, Elias and Ebene Quartets, Kristian Bezuidenhout and Ensemble Marsyas in the delightful churches of the East Neuk. This year, being the tenth Festival, we have a Schubertiad led by Christian Zacharias, together with the Gould Piano Trio, the Belcea Quartet and Llyr Williams.

Lots of goodies, but I am particularly looking forward to Bezuidenhout playing the Mozart C minor sonata, and (together with the Marsyas Ensemble) the piano quintet K452; and Zacharias playing the Schubert B flat sonata, and (together with Krysztof Chorzelski on the viola) the "Arpeggione" sonata.

The Proms - the Rhosygilwen Proms, 27-29 August - on the Pembrokeshire/Ceredigion border - Tim Hugh and friends playing chamber music, in three mouthwatering programmes. The Oak Hall, a purpose-built barn-like concert hall, has splendid acoustics and getting there involves (for me) a scenic drive across the Preseli Hills. The atmosphere is all very relaxed - last year Tim Hugh and chums (including Andrew Marriner) had spent the afternoon in a boat watching dolphins in Cardigan Bay. This year's friends are:

Hello Jean,

I usually take in one or two, or sometimes three recitals from Kendal Parish Church. There was the Henschel there last year with two stunning recitals and a few years earlier I remember The Sixteen performing. This year I might be tempted by the Fine Arts Quartet.

I am looking forward to those Shostakovich concerts myself especially the one played by Victoria Mullova. So much for the Halle not paying out for top soloists. Sir Mark must have met Victoria down at their local Holland Park Tesco Express.
