Tonite is Britten's Sea Interludes from Grimes and the Shostakovich 7. We are meeting one of my sons for dinner at a famous German Restaurant a few blocks from Orchestra Hall and I need to limit the beer intake so that my bladder will make it through the Leningrad .
Gerald McBurney is giving the pre concert lecture and I am looking forward to that.

Kudos to Jaap Van Zweden and the CSO for a great concert last night. I've been critical of the Conductor before, who has been a bit uneven in previous Concerts, but last night he was very much in control and produced great music.
The Britten was suitably atmospheric. There were 5 movements instead of the usual 4.
The Shostakovich was very well done. The "Invasion Sequence"--which sounds like Ravel's Bolero stumbled into Gotterdamerung--was superbly handled. The other 3 movements are imo inevitably anticlimactic; however they were well played and musically shaped.
Cali, you might be interested to know that I had sauerbraten at the Berghoff before the concert. It tasted wonderful but didn't sit well in my stomach. However, I'm quite quite confident that any extraneous noises produced by my Gastrointestinal Track were drowned out by the Shostakovich.
btw, the Berghoff has been around for almost 100 years. Part of it's history is that a bootlegger named Bugs Moran was eating his lunch there on Febuary 14, 1929, when a newpaper boy announced (mistakenly) that he had been killed along with the rest of his gang during what became known as The St. Valentine's Day Massacre.

Glad the concert was good! And interesting about the restaurant & Mr Moran's lucky escape - sounds like a good advert for leaving the office to go to lunch, to me. Set me ferretting too - one reads "After Prohibition was repealed in 1933... the Berghoff Restaurant in Chicago has the first liquor license issued in Chicago after Prohibition ended and it's on display in the restaurant's bar." Yes, seems an interesting place and I could be lured there for a plate of sausages (even though on trips to Germany, it's the food above anything that makes me want to leave within 24 hours... )

My previously iron clad stomach is less forgiving of exotic foods as I age. Perhaps we should have a thread devoted tothe pairing Concert selections with cuisine in order to hide any embarassinments, in the same manner that restaurants recommend food and wine pairings.

Well St David's Hall, Cardiff, seems to be still in business (see earlier discussion) - next season's programme landed with a dull thud on the doormat. A chance to catch up with such neglected masterpieces as Beethoven 3,5 and 9 and PC4, Tchaikovsky 5,6, R&J and VC, Vivaldi 4 Seasons (N Benedetti). There's an all-Sibelius programme by Ashkenazy/Philharmonia. with Vadim Repin in the VC. He was last in Cardiff 8 years ago playing...the Sibelius VC.

OK there's some other stuff as well.

I have to venture a long way upcountry from the Land of Kernow in early July, all the way to Harrogate for a conference.

For complicated family reasons my wife and I are then venturing even further into the frozen North, and are thinking of taking what's on offer at the Bridgewater Hall on Fri 4 July, a concert by Chethams forces (SO + Chorus) - Debussy Prelude a l'apres-midi & Ravel orch pieces (Alborada, Rhapsodie espagnole, La valse), and then the Szymanowski Stabat Mater, all cond. Jan van Steen. Not sure if the solo singers (Catriona Hewitson, Margaret McDonald and Simon Walfisch) are professionals or students. The programme certainly appeals.

We've never been to the Bridgewater before - are Chethams a reasonable bet for an enjoyable evening??

PS A little googling suggest that Ms Hewitson has been making waves all round the country for a couple off years at least...

I look forward to reading what you thought of it, BS. We're going the week after, in Birmingham (where I saw, and was very impressed by, their Rheingold; couldn't get to the next two). Meanwhile, more imminently, I'm about to drive to Cheltenham to see the 'live' cinecast of the Glyndebourne Rosenkavalier (only 2 weeks after seeing the CBSO one in the flesh: I hope my arteries don't clog up from all the richness).

I will let you know. I attended Rheinegold and Walkure at the Lowry and Siegried at Leeds Town Hall. I have enjoyed them all very much. And have high hopes for Saturday. I also see they are staging the Flying Dutchman next year. So wonder is they plan on staging a Wagner Opera every summer.
