Booked yesterday for two concerts by the Berlin Staatskapelle and Barenboim, April 20/21 2015.

Why aren't the South Bank Centre e-mailing me with details of concerts I may be interested in rather than expecting me to negotiate their difficult website? While I often find such e-mails are unwanted in this case I'd make an exception.

It's no wonder concerts are sparsely attended if they don't make the effort to get the punters in.

Next up are three Aldeburgh Festival concerts in June - Pierre-Laurent Aimard, the Arcanto Quartet (both in the Maltings) and the Britten-Pears Young Artists concert, an afternoon concert in the Jubilee Hall which includes someone having a stab at the Britten Nocturnal for guitar. These will be interspersed with walks and birdwatching, and superb pub food at our favourite hostelries washed down with Adnams Ale - perfection, in fact.

One of the pubs is the Crown at Snape, just down the road from the Maltings, badly flooded during December's tidal surge but now happily up and running again.

Wonder if I'll spot a certain RW?

The Vale of Glamorgan Festival in Penarth and Cardiff (and Fonmon Castle and Ewenny Priory Church) from Thu 8 to Sat 17 May. All music is by living composers, plus celebrations of John Tavener and Steve Martland. Especially looking forward to Chamber Choir Ireland, conducted by Paul Hillier, at Royal Welsh College, Cardiff on Thu 15 (Tarik O'Regan) and All Saints Church, Penarth (Martland, Tavener + 2). Four of the chamber concert events are in the newly restored Penarth Pier Pavilion. Ensemble MidtVest return to the Festival over the first three days. The closing concert in St David's Hall presents The Protecting Veil and Tavener's 2007 Requiem. This Festival keeps me interested in new music.

                      Thursday 23 October 2014

Bedrich Smetana: Vltava (from Má vlast)

                      Fryderyk Chopin: Piano Concerto No.1

Antonin Dvorák: Symphony No.9 (From the New World)

                      Philharmonia Orchestra
                      Krzysztof Urbanski conductor
                      Jan Lisiecki piano

A 'popular' concert - but a great opportunity to hear Lisiecki in an ideal piece (like hearing Trifonov in Rachmaninov 3, which is next year)...

I am exceedingly jealous. He is a most exciting young conductor. Maybe you might report back (and on whether - hope of hopes - there were any microphones in evidence)?
