Future concerts you're excited to have tickets for.....

I thought it might be worth having a thread for Forumites' forthcoming concert-going plans (post Proms).

To kick off, I'm excited to have bought tickets for the following recently:

    25 September, Barbican, 7.30
R Strauss: Burleske for piano & orchestra
    Mahler: Symphony No 6

    Barry Douglas, piano
    Thomas Dausgaard, conductor
    London Symphony Orchestra

    10 October, RFH
Brahms: Piano Concerto no 1 & Symphony No 1
    Hélène Grimaud, piano
    Andriss Nelsons, conductor
    Philharmonia Orchestra

    15 January, RFH
James MacMillan: Viola Concerto (World premiere)
    Mahler: Symphony No 6

    Lawrence Power, viola
    Vladimir Jurowski, conductor
    London Philharmonic Orchestra

I'm eagerly anticipating the luxury of two live Mahler 6s a few months apart, and hearing Nelsons live for the first time, plus some cracking soloists

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Likewise, in my case, two Bruckner 8's - VPO/Maazel at the Proms, and the Orchestra of WNO under Koenigs in April 2014. The WNO are pretty good at Bruckner, what with all that Wagner, and, after a dearth of many years, we're starting to get more regular Bruckner performances in Cardiff.

Actually quite a good St Davids Hall season all round coming up - we'll be wearing out the M4.

The period up to New Year is a bit more thinly populated with must-sees than usual for me, but these have stood out resulting in early purchases:

      25 September, Liverpool
      Others: Other Stuff ()
      Shostakovich: Symphony No 13
      RLPO/Petrenko

      28 September, RFH
      Britten: Peter Grimes
      LPO/Jurowski/Skelton

      10 Oct, Barbican
      Others: More Other Stuff...
      Shostakovich: Symphony No 4
      LSO/Haitink

      1 Nov, Liverpool
      Others: Yet More Other Stuff...
      Shostakovich: Symphony No 15
      RLPO/Petrenko

      14 Dec, RFH
      Adams: El Nino
      LPO/LPC/Jurowksi et al

Various self-evident themes there. RLPO/Petrenko and LPO/Jurowksi are, by some margin, the most interesting conductor/orchestra combinations on the UK scene right now IMO, at least in this sort of rep.

Oh, and if I can get a suitable ticket for less than £3742 or whatever Covent Garden charges, ROH/Nelsons Strauss: Elektra too as Nelsons' R Strauss has been unfailingly glorious in my experience to-date.

Jessie J at Edinburgh Castle in a couple of weeks time! Mrs. P G and I do like a pop concert every couple of years.

The Edinburgh Festival starts soon and we have tickets for various concerts including Mahler 9 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Should be ok.

The RSNO playing 'The Planets' at the beginning of their season in ? October. Mrs. P G loves that work but has never heard it live. Should be good!

You could make it a hat-trick if you came to London on

          Thursday 19 June 2014

MOZART Piano Concerto No 23 K488
          BRUCKNER Symphony No 8

          Fabio Luisi conductor
          Lise de la Salle piano
          London Symphony Orchestra

"...the isle is full of noises,

Belittling Lorin is a bit cheeky?

Interesting head-to-head possible within a mere two weeks or so...

              Tuesday 15 October

MOZART Piano Concerto No 27 K595
              SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No 15
              Bernard Haitink conductor
              Emanuel Ax piano
              London Symphony Orchestra

I teetered on the brink of booking for the latter... still not sure why I didn't...

Tongue-in-cheek, cloughie, after recent threads! (Terry Johns, Intermezzo etc.) - I'm greatly looking forward to it.

Fair enough but he has made some remarkable recordings over a career which is probably one of the longest of our current conductors.

Indeed - he can count me as a fan, both of his conducting and his dress sense - seen him several times, though curiously I don't seem to have any of his recordings. I used to have the odd one on LP......

For me today greatly anticipating leaving on Friday for the York Early Music Festival. The program looks great and for the first time I'm going to the entire festival.

                          21 September Symphony Hall

                          CBSO/Nelsons Season Opening Concert
Dvorak Violin Concerto with Anne Sofie Mutter (high expectations)
                          The Rite of Spring

                          24 January Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford

                          Philharmonia/Nelsons
Brahms PC 2 with the electrifying Helene Grimaud (I've still got LvB 5 ringing in my ears from a month ago)
                          Brahms Symphony 4

I've a lot of travelling to do but what could be more perfect in summer than:

31 July At Salle nr Norwich
Maria Joao Pires - Chopin Recital in the church at 11am, marquee for refreshments etc after

(I envy Simon B El Nino & can assure Caliban that when I heard Lise de la Salle (not in Mozart) she was wonderful)
