Well, Manuella Blackburn's "Domestic Bliss" concert at City University's Performance Space was short and sweet. Just 45 mimutes. The five works played put me in mind of "Live Batts!!", writ large. Well worth travelling for (around 4 hours each way).

No, he didn't because he's been busy publishing a village history and researching two talks that he's giving this coming week.

It was a fascinating day, I'll write more later, I hope, and Sally Beamish who was in charge and the young composers' chief friend and critic was superb: thoughtful, helpful, supportive, friendly, quick-eared, eagle-eyed and intensely practical. An example: most of the scores were full of tempo marking solely expressed mathematically: e.g. crochet = 87, as if the composers were talking to their computer's software. Sally advised : " Add words e.g. allegro for speed, and maybe another, or a few, to describe the music's mood e,g. Barbaro." "And don't over finesse that no.of notes per minute, conductors are not time machines."

Biggest criticism of the day: the BSO relied on its house staff to provide microphony support to the "Jurors" in a big hall, no support to the composers and no roving mike so that the auduence ( a tiny bunch) might feedback. Only Sally had a radio mike. So it became Radio Sally Beamish. She was worth hearing; talking 1:1 with others, so were they!

String quartets by old friends Michael Chant and Howard Skempton (Hall 2, Kings Place, 29th inst.) I got to know these two a few weeks after the Ealing concert of which this forthcoming event is the 50th-anniversary celebration. I have to admit that while I know Howard's string quartet writing well, I only know the more recent of Michael's composition for this combination of instruments.
