This pioneering work was developed by acclaimed composer Henry for the Cathedral's inaugural mass in 1967. However, Henry was unable to complete it in time, and another work was substituted. Is that the Pierre Henry, pioneer of Musique concrète, or some other French composer of that quite common name?

I was confused to begin with because the first half was a different piece altogether, which wasn't properly explained, and I was trying to hear it as a commentary on the Mass, which didn't work. Turned out it was a set by Vincent Epplay and Samon Takahashi, made in response to Henry's music.

When we got to the Mass, there was a lot of text, manipulated but clearly recognisable in the Kyrie, Gloria and Credo. The Sanctus and Benedictus became more ecstatic and immersive (a word I thought of before Jarvis Cocker said it!) What was surprising was that in those iconoclastic post-Vatican II days it was the Latin text that was used.

It was clearly the place to be last night - I've never seen the Cathedral so full.

I tried to find out what they'd substituted for it at the 1967 Consecration, but the archives just say ''another Mass". Whose was it that's been so cruelly forgotten?
