The Manfred is a work that I really enjoy, but seems to be the Rodney Dangerfield of Tchaikovsky Symphonies--it doesn't get any respect. Every critic or Internet Forum delights in bashing it. I admit that it is a flawed masterpiece, but a masterpiece nonetheless, certainly better than the Composer's numbered Second and Third Symphonies, with the middle movements at least being first rate Tchaikovsky.
I wish I could e as enthusiastic about the Scriabin, a piece that has never clicked for me.
Poeme is a Muti speciality. If he can't sell it to you, no-one can!

I'd agree with you about Manfred. I've always enjoyed it (just been listening to Silvestri's superb mono version this week) but I think Tchaikovsky himself is to blame for the critical mauling it gets (he threw the first stone, I believe).

Tchaikovsky criticized a lot his own works, such as the 5th Symphony, 1812, and even the Nutcracker. That doesn't seem to have effected the popularity of those works.
Hope that you are right about Muti

Manfred is arguably Tchaikovsky's best piece - and Muti's recording shows that he knows how to give it everything it's got! A covetable programme!

I agree about 'Manfred' and am delighted that it is being included in the Halle concerts next season.
Other gems in the next season:-
            Bloch's 'Shlomo'.
            Mahler 6
            Shostakovich 15
A Dvorak festival including the Piano Concerto
            Verdi's 'Requiem'

YES!! Looking forward to it enormously.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Oh yes - unmissable. I haven't actually booked yet but there are still swathes of tickets available...

And happily it doesn't clash with my Sound Unbound activity on Saturday over at Milton Hall

On 20th and 21st February I'll be in the Philharmonie de Paris. The Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Yannick Nézet-Séguin will perform all the Mendelssohn symphonies over the two nights.

Thursday November 5th. Bridgewater Hall. Halle/Nikolaj Znaider. Juan Wang ('cello)

                        Verdi: 'Force of Destiny' Overture.
                        Bloch: 'Schlomo'.
                        Tchaikovsky: 'Manfred' Symphony.

I've called it my 'London Bus' concert. I last heard 'Schlomo' over 45 years ago and 'Manfred' over 30 years ago. I have looked for them to be programmed for years and then the two of them appear together on the same programme. Apparently this will be the first time the Halle have eve played 'Schlomo'.

It might be the first time anyone has played 'Schlomo'

Just spoiled myself and got a ticket for The Simon Bolivar Orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel (with Yuja Wang and Cynthia Millar) performing Messiaen's Turangalîla Symphony in the Philharmonie in Cologne on 24th January.

They're also performing the symphony in Barcelona, Toulouse and London, but the Cologne date is the only one that suited me. I'm excited about this. Dudamel and the Turangalîla could be a perfect marriage.

Due to an unexpected family matter, I am now unable to attend tonight's concert at the RFH.

Could be the last opportunity to see the amazing Stan Skrowaczewski who has just celebrated his 92nd birthday?

Should be a memorable evening. Look forward to hearing reports from those lucky enough to be able to attend!
