    Music Matters - Cornwall

Today's Music Matters focused rather on the North Cornwall coast and its arty connections. The excellent brass band tradition of Cornwall (arising from the miners, of course) was skimmed over with a brief reference to that infernal Floral Dance. What a shame the opportunity was missed to go a little further south and to the St Denis Championship Brass Band which has competed in the national finals (with all the big boys from oop North) a number of times.

Mrs Ardcarp and I were completely blown away (!) by their junior section a few years ago. We went to a local regatta where they were providing the al fresco entertainment...and we had thought in advance O Gawd (or words to that effect) but we were presented with a dazzling display of virtuosity, including Ravel's Bolero from memory. They had apparently just won the National Junior Bras Band Final....and all this from a band with no county or national financial support.

No mention was made either of Truro Cathedral Choir which is undoubtedly one of the finest cathedral choirs at the moment, an astonishing feat considering its remoteness from where it's all at.

    Good heads up Ardy.

The Truro Cathedral choir is indeed quite superb from what I have heard, I would certainly encourage those who listen to choral music a little infrequently to hunt something out on youtube.

    oh here's a sampler anyway.
This is a compilation video of the tracks featured on the Truro Cathedral Choir/Philip Stopford CD released December 2012/January 2013. The CD can be ordered...
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

Cornwall is a well-known hive of artistic activity. I knew some people who moved there to get away from Essex...
