Who are your favourite five conductors, seen live.?

My choice of Sir Mark Elder might surprise a few people but I have seen some fifty or so of his concerts with the Halle and I feel he is one of the most inspirational conductors around.

Elder was my Number 6!
No 7 would have been Walton - no-one's mentioned him - and he was considered to be a mediocre conductor, I think, but he was peerless conducting his own music.

Iagree thatMark Elder is inspirational. I've seen some of those Friday night TV programmes where he talks amd conducts and he certainly held my interest although I've never seen him live.

Not really. He's your local conductor. You've seen him more than others. This obviously makes you biased.

Just 'cos I live and attend concerts in Manchester doesn't mean that I'm biased by including Mark Elder. The last 13 years have been the most enjoyable and exciting concert going of the over 50 years of attending concerts and Mark Elder is the reason for it.

I haven't seen all that many conductors live but these are some whose performances have been very memorable:

Colin Davis
Rostropovich (in Shostakovich)
Gergiev (if only for that terrific 2002 Prom performance of Shostakovich 4)

Only ever seen Gatti in WNO context, where he did fine work for years, Thropple.

I often used to play for Stanford Robinson in the 1960s, with the BBCSSO and the BBC Northern.
I do think he was underrated and I particularly remember a marvellous Sibelius 6 and a lovely Delius 'Brigg Fair' that he conducted with the BBCSSO.
I don't remember any TV broadcasts, though. Perhaps you are referring to ERIC Robinson?

Eric it was ! There's a recording of Dylan Thomas talking about an American poetry tour. He was driven to a venue by a husband and wife. The lady said " Mr Thomas, I so admire your work, especially Sorrell and Son " Thomas said " Yes, it's nice book, but it was actually written by Warwick Deeping'
The husband muttered " Caught again, Emily ! "

Many years ago, (1980's?), I went to hear the LSO who were on tour with Abbado. They were playing the same programme in 10 cities. (Mozart 'Jupiter' and Brahms 4). I think Edinburgh was city no. 8. Far from going through the motions, you would think it was the only time these musicians were going to Play these works. It was a wonderful concert and I remember it to this day.

For me, THAT is the hallmark of a great conductor.

Bohm, Boult, Haitink, Abbado, Jansons ( fils, although I'm sure I would have approved of his Dad as well) , & if allowed any extras I'd include Bernstein on the strength of that performance of Mahler 5 with the Vienna Phil at the Proms in 1987......Oh & Paavo Berglund as I first heard Sibelius in concerts he directed with the BSO ( never had the fortune to encounter Silvestri in the flesh, HS, unfortunately, though I wore out the classic Studio 2 "In The South" on vinyl)....Lots of others I admire, & an equal number of dreadful charlatans I'd rather not name. Wish I'd heard Barbirolli, Jochum, & Kubelik live,,,,,

Ah, yes. Arvid Jansons. I'd almost forgotten him. He was a very well respected guest conductor with Barbirolli's Halle Orchestra in the late 60s. Better than his son, possibly...

This is hopeless - I can think of at least 5 more. I've had to knock some off the list because I didn't actually see/hear them in an outstanding performance - and that includes Barbirolli, and there are some whose performances were outstanding but with only five allowed ... !!
