Anyone interested in Mewton-Wood might like to know that there is an excellent 3CD set on ABC Classics in their Australian Heritage series. I was able to find a copy when visiting Sydney.
There is an excellent Beethoven 4th Piano Concerto, the Sonata Op. 30 No. 3 with Ida Haendel, Max Rostal playing Busoni's Violin Sonata No.2, Shostakovich's 1st Piano Concerto, Tchaikovsky's 2nd, and much more.
The set is available from Buywell Classical at £32, and is a very worthwhile investment, it's probably all he recorded.

He was a remarkable pianist, friend of Britten & Pears, and Radio 3 has a programme about him by John Amis (I think) sitting in the vaults.

He was a victim of the anti-gay purge that gripped this country in the 1950s

Many thanks for the 3CD set alert, Ferret

            Three additions:

Alexei Sultanov, a Russian American pianist won second prize at the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in 1995; the grand prize was not awarded. Sultanov refused to accept the second prize, and suffered a severe stroke soon after. Even after a second stroke in 2001 paralyzed his left side, Sultanov continued to play the piano with his right hand with his wife, Dace Abele, accompanying him with the left hand. He died on June 30, 2005 at the age of 35 in Fort Worth.

Mihaela Ursuleasa renowned Romanian concert pianist died suddenly in August 2012 at the age of 33. She was found dead in her Vienna apartment by police officers. The cause of death is thought to have been a cerebral haemorrhage,

Julius Katchen died of cancer aged 42

And of course the great Kathleen Ferrier, a mere 42 when she died from cancer.

I'm glad I saw her live.

Just spotted this, from the Brahms Piano concerto thread - http://www.gewandhaus.de/gewandhaus-...on-paris-wien/

Arcadi Volodos is a pianist I've wanted to hear for quite a while. He doesn't come to Europe often I think. I've never heard Riccardo Chailly before either. Only slight regret is that Volodos isn't doing both concerti - I'd perhaps rather hear him in No 1.

                    A few more:

William Coxe-Ife (conductor) and Clifford Benson (Pianist) Both died in the Strumble Head plane crash, returning from a concert in Cork.

Ralph Holmes (violinist) died from a Brain Tumour

                    HS

and BTW: Has any mention been made of Guido Cantelli? (He died in the same plane crash as Ginette Neveau)

I remember him, and seeing extracts of his amazing performance.... I had no idea (though I do recall wondering some years back why he'd disappeared from view )

Thanks for the documentary link, Caliban

I saw Sultanov only once in recital at Wigmore Hall and I regret to say that I had him down as 'a bit of a basher'

True - a great loss, at the age of 36 (just a week after being named music director of La Scala). But his death on 24 November 1956 was just over seven years after Ginette Neveu's on 28 October 1949

It is like a rather lugubrious switchback ride, I agree saly
