Seem to have got a bit of a zombie thread yet again, but hey ho, if you want to let dead people in who am I to stop you all?

I was rather hoping we could focus on live people, before they go to glory.

I'd love to have seen Gould and I'd like to catch Sir Simon and the BP before it's too late...

            YES.
I never googled it, and it was a spur of the moment thought.
But she does have a lovely voice, and come to think of it, i have precisely zero of her recordings.
But i would love to see her sing, so it counts.

            Great thread Dave.
            am I forgiven ?!

"Live people" like "Karajan, Celibidache, Klemperer, Rostropovich" as mentioned in the OP?

              I'd love to hear:

Andrew Parrott conducting a Bach choir work.
              Osmo Vanska in Sibelius.
              Manze in RVW.
              Belohlavek in Martinu (or Rubbra).
              Pollini.

Fair point. For clarity - they were alive when I saw some of the ones not listed here. I didn't get to see any of the ones you have listed, though I could have done. I don't go to zombie shows.

I'm asking about people who are currently active.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

In 1951 I queued for tickets for a Toscanini concert in Festival of Britain series.

They ran out JUST before they got to me. Three of us were so browned off we went fora coffee together
                      and spent a pleasant morning.

But I did want to see Arturo.

Toscanini's famous Brahms concerts were in 1952, the only time he conducted in the Royal Festival Hall. Perhaps tickets went on sale early ?

I really wanted to go to the Festival Hall during Festival Year, but there were surprisingly few concerts, and they were mostly high prestige events beyond the reach of my pocket money.

I was at boarding school in 1952, and with a couple of friends had the privilege of listening to the broadcasts on a massive radio in the housemaster's study.

I'm afraid that the CDs of those broadcasts are a bit of a disappointment, but I was riveted at the time.

Toscanini was said to have had a memory lapse by starting the wrong Brahms Overture, but the Philharmonia played on and covered the lapse without the audience
being aware. This was said to have lead to his decision to retire.

Apocryphal story perhaps ? No doubt our experts here will know!

Of the younger, and hopefully not in imminent danger of fading away, generation, I would like to see/hear Natalie Clein, and Alisa Weilerstein could be good too.

I'm not sure if Anner Bylsma is still performing - he'd be good.

I have seen Menahem Pressler (Beaux Arts Trio) and he was still very vibrant not so long ago. he's coming up to 90, so I'd recommend seeing him before long. I'd certainly go to see him again.

This could start to read like an endangered bird list! Note though that youth doesn't always prevent disasters. There was a cellist who died young, I think after playing a squash match. I can't remember his name.

I expect you're right Ferret, it may have been 1952. I went to a number of concerts in 1951 and it's all a bit of a muddle after so long.

I think Sargent and Boult conducted the ones I did get into. And I remember a wonderful solo recital by oneof my favourites, Victoria de los Angeles.

At the music library we had proms passes supplied and often had RAH tickets given us. It was a shock to hav to PAY for the RFH.

I've still not been able to identify the young cellist who died, though I found a few others. Feuermann died aged 39, while a young Turkish cellist died at 28 a couple of years back - http://www.todayszaman.com/newsDetai...?newsId=264634. The cellist I've been thinking of died most likely between 1970 and 1990, and being male could not have been Miss Du Pré.
