I watched a lot of open rehearsals by the Allegri 4tet in 1970s Oxford, usually in the Holywell Music Room.
Maguire usually played with a ciggie alight, lodged hot end upwards between the fingers of his bow hand. It was easy to spot where each down-bow started - a marked puff of smoke issued and rose towards the ceiling! On cello was Bruno Schrecker, puffing away on his pipe. No smoke emissions from 2nd violin or viola (Patrick Ireland?) as far as I recall.
We shan't see the like again I expect. No doubt we're all the healthier for itI keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!
