I think it DOES matter
I think it matters that the myths of how well "WE" do things are exploded
there are many fine musicians in the RAF et al and I have worked with many ex bandsmen in orchestras etc
BUT
there is an almost imperialist glee to the usual nonsense trotted out on these occasions

the truth is that if you want spectacle you are better off with a totalitarian regime
The British are all over the place in comparison

carrying on believing that "we" somehow do everything better is a delusion that it would be wise to grow out of IMV

I understand your point but I still feel that, if the ceremonial stuff is effectively inconsequential (other than for those who participate in it or enjoy being spectators thereof), it wouldn't really matter whether or not the Brits did it "better" than anyone else, especially if it's hardly worth doing in the first place.

As to armed forces musicians, yes, of course there are some fine ones, but on what conceivable grounds would either taxpayers who fund those forces expect them to turn out musicians or those who consider a career in them be swayed by an assumption that it might be one possible route to some kind of musical training?

To different culutres, I think. Admittedly, NK does know how to put "on a show", with all those armours on display, etc. We have some but not as much as NK does. Their parades, to me, have little soul in them Ours as that and much more besides.

The NK Mass Games are extraordinary, the idea that they are without "soul" is a bit strange IMV

I missed it (didn't know it was on) Highlights are on BBC2 tonight at 6.30. I intend to watch, I love anything like that, the horses, the soldiers, the music, the Pomp and Circumstance!! I did see, on the BBC1 listings they did offer a commentary-free viewing.
