Today's Trooping the Colour Ceremony 2013

What a fantastic Birthday Parade today. The way it went and the music ofcourse. What did other boarders feel about this today?

I watched it for cousin-in-law, Caspar, now living in the US, as he was a Captain in the Scots Guards until a few years ago.

Sometimes we are near enough to London to see a bit ofthe flypast but not today, too much low cloud.

I admit I didn't watch it all, just dipped in. Nice to see the Red Arrows again too.

I went to the Fair on the Square in Highgate, which was soggy to say the least! I blame the Monarchy, more often and not it rains on the Queen's Birthday.
The Fair was mostly kebab stalls reeking of burning flesh, and two lots of morris dancers, one was a ladies team from Cricklewood. Outside the church were some depressed looking sheep. One of them had been sheared, the others waited their turn with resignation while the canvas dripped on them.

There were lots of third prize winning victoria sponges in evidence and cup cake stalls everywhere in between the bric a brac.

All in all, an outstanding example of the North London middle class at play!

Ah, The Red Arrows, a hard act to follow!

Besdies the usual music they have, I thought that Grand March from Rienzi by Wagner. wasnt to bad and the way the used Rossini's Theving Magpie, was not too bad either?

I love it Ferret. The burning flesh, the resigned, depressed sheep, the lady morris dancers.

I hope you had a cup cake to cheer you, you paint a wonderful picture of it all.

A lot cheaper to put on than carnivals for the tourists as well :grump::grump::grump:

What about Trooping of The Fairy Cake next year, serenaded by Youth Bands & Orchestras & sundry other musical possibilities?

... but why, o BBM, should the taxpayer have to pay for all this trumpery??

I agree. An excellent parade with some fine music. And a most impressive flypast! Nice to see the RAF making such a contribution although as an ex RAF "Bandy" I was always glad that the QBP only involved the Guards bands!!

By the way, I for one cannot understand how it is possible to play any musical instrument on horseback, and I have to say that the mounted bands really don't sound bad under the circumstances. How on earth do they maintain their embouchures and not end up with bruised lips or missing teeth??

An equally pertinent question might be 'why do they do it?' too - most of us wouldn't appreciate the skill involved whereas with knife-throwing and fire-eating the risk and danger is more obvious

Well that didn't take long, did it?

Let's see....all the troops and police are being paid anyway.....the Royal Family don't charge extra for turning up........I suppose there's a bit of expense in terms of closing the Mall for a few hours.....but really, in the overall scheme of things, the cost of the Troop is diddly squat. And I imagine that the bars, restaurants and tourist attractions in the vicinity enjoy a lot of extra custom.

When I first went to work in the music library the chief librarian was an ex-flautist with one of the mounted bands.
Shame on me, I can't remember the name of the band but he even played for soirees at Buck House and had stories to tell by the dozen.
He said when playing his flute the horse was just controlled by his knees.

I hope the troops are paid to defend the land against invaders, the police to preserve domestic peace.

You get pleasure from these rituals - fine : pay for them.

I get no pleasure from them.

I don't expect you to fund the various things that give me pleasure....

My guess would be that they're being paid overtime Mr Pee - Jack & Jill Copper don't turn out at the weekend for normal rates, I bet.

I'd forgotten that you were one of The Boys In The Band
