I can't speak for #2 but as regards #1 which I love more, I do think that the Zimerman/Rattle recording on DG is the business, not far behind Gilels/Jochum.

Plus the performance given in the finals of the Leeds Piano Competition by the winner, Kim Sun-Wook, with the Hallé under Mark Elder, was absolutely tremendous. A kind contact at the BBC obtained a DVD of the performance and I often play it

Depends how you define "more recent" - like practically everyone else, the Gilels/BPO/Jochum recordings are my favourite recordings. Only Brendel/BPO/Abbado of the recordings of the pair since then that I know match them in my affections. I'd be very interested in a HIPP recording or seven.

But many thanks for starting this Thread, Bbm: for some daft reason, Brahms' solo Piano Music is a glowering omission from my CD shelves. I had Katchen on LPs but have never replaced them - except with a rather routine set from NIMBUS some years ago: Martin Jones, IIRC - a fine artist, and I wish I could play the works half as well as he does; but understated performances lacking the fire and ice that makes me want to listen to them repeatedly. The boxed set was one of the casualties of a house move sixteen years ago - not as deeply missed as many others.

A very good shout, the Zimerman/Rattle for no 1, Cali

I admire the two recorded performances by Stephen Kovacevich with both Sawallisch and Sir Colin Davis - not up-to-date certainly but bristling with good things and some great couplings

The oft-underrated Bruno Leonardo-Gelber is represented by two 'live recordings; but I think I recall a studio recording of no 1 with Kempe too which was rather good.

However, this is my favourite concerto no 2 (Gilels,CSO,Reiner)
Yes, this was my first recording of no.2 (a Camden Classics LP) and I always loved it - can't think why I never got round to duplicating it on CD, but thanks for spurring me to plug the gap.

Like nearly everyone else, I have and admire Gilels/Jochum in both, as well as Richter/Leinsdorf in no.1; if these aren't sufficiently "modern", I would also recommend the Freire/Chailly recordings. Another lovely recording of no.2 is Geza Anda (with Fricsay possibly? not at home so can't double-check).

Again like many others, I am short on the solo piano pieces - hoping for more recommendations here for my upcoming birthday list (or is it just a case of: buy the Katchen set?)

Not Fricsay - Das Wunder himself

It's looking more and more that way to me, Rolmill - I remember them with great affection; nobody else (AFAIK) has done a comparable "complete" set, and this is probably the cheapest way of getting the works in one easy payment!

Ah, well; as some idiot recently remarked to Bbm: "it's only money"!

On the spur of the moment we headed cross country to Basingstoke last night to catch two artists we had not seen before in a favourite venue. Worth the trip to hear Pierrre-Laurent Aimard in Brahms PC 1 with Christoph von Dohnanyi at the Anvil with its marvellous detail-revealing acoustic. They're at RFH tonight.
