Yes, the LSO live of Brahms 3 with the 2nd serenade has a dull, lifeless perspective... I don't know the Amsterdam Brahms well, but I prefer the Bruckner of that Dutch vintage to almost any of his later efforts - swift and direct, the musical argument utterly clear, without exaggeration. Fine, natural recorded perspective. Rather like Rattle with the CBSO - the first partnership was special, learning and exploring together, impossible to replicate.

Brahms is one of those composers who has grown on me as I've got older and it's with some surprise that I see that I have accumulated several cycles of the symphonies in a relatively short period of time with many other individual issues. I've got complete cycles from Karajan (x2), Haitink (x3), Böhm, Solti, Rattle, Walter, Furtwängler and Boult.
My favourites amongst these are the Boult and Haitink's Boston set. Haitink's LSO set is a disappointment apart from a quite magnificent 2nd. Boult is glorious throughout.
Only have Arrau/Haitink, Gilels/Jochum, Pollini/Abbado and Brendel/Abbado in both Piano Concertos, one or two others as single issues.
The only recoding of the Violin Concerto I had for many years was Heifetz and the Chicago SO/Reiner - what a disc!"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink
