Havnt heard anything yet about my request. I have known this Elgar piece for ages now. First heard HM Royal Marines play it on an old Studio2 EMI LP, conducted by Lt Col Sir vivian Dunn. Really nice chap he was. i have been conducted by him on a number of occaisions, years ago now.

just waiting to hear on iplayer from Essential Classics this morning of that BBCSO/Boult 1987 Prom performance of Elgar's Symphony No.1! Rob seemed to rather enthuse about it raqther a lot earlier today!

Listening to COTW today I found myself powerfully moved by Vaughan Williams's 6th symphony, not having listened to the work for some time. I feel somehow that unexpiated fury has seldom been better expressed musically than in the slow movement passage in which three times the orchestral forces well up over that reiterated 3-note figure.

Yes I realised my mistake just now(facepalm emoticon!)

That performance, btw, was an absolute stonker! If you ever want a performance then this should be it RC,, certainly was right about this version(BBCSO/Sir Adrian Boult)
