I first knew it in George Hurst's recording with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta (now on Chandos). It's an early piece (pre-Enigma) and is for an orchestra without woodwind - string, brass, timps & organ.

Yes know it very well, I believe it was written for the then Prince of Wales visit to Worcester, a nice earlier example of Elgar in refined noble mood.

I don't want to take the wind out of your sails, but could it possibly be something to do with the anniversary of a certain coronation? If so it would be interesting to hear music which was written or performed in or about 1953 and has been unheard since.

In addition, there are many 20th / 21st century British pieces which haven't been performed or broadcast that could be given an airing, such as Arnold Cooke's 6th symphony (not performed), Arthur Butterworth's 6th and 7th symphonies (not broadcast), but it's probably too late for anyone to do anything about it now ...

I was surprised last year that Malcolm Williamson's 4th Symphony wasn't finally played. Written for the Queen's Silver Jubilee, it lies unperformed and I was hoping that perhaps the Coronation Anniversary might be an opportunity for this work to finally see the light of day. Poor Williamson is one composer who fortunes are still in the doldrums. Yes I know he was a controversial character and his output is uneven, but at his best he is a very fine composer, and to have a Symphony of his lying unplayed is tragic to say the least.
