June is British Music Month on Radio 3!

    According to Gramophone magazine

"BBC Radio 3 is to celebrate the music of the British Isles throughout June, from Parry’s Jerusalem to music from the Court of Mary Queen of Scots.

Among the highlights of the month-long celebration will be Rob Cowan and Sarah Walker’s 'Essential Classics', which will introduce 20 Great Works every weekday from 9am. In addition 'Composer of the Week' will examine the works of four leading English composers – Vaughan Williams, Parry, Elgar and Lloyd."

There is further detail in the above article.

I hope that this will cheer up all our members who are great enthusiasts for the music of these isles. I'm wonder if their threads have encouraged the BBC in this month-long celebration? Perhaps some e-mails/tweets/texts to Radio 3 will encourage them further, perhaps to include British music more generally in programming.

I apologise for not using a BBC weblink but I couldn't find one but that's probably me

much as I love the music of Elgar, RVW and Parry I'm sure there are many people here who could suggest many other names.

Still,it's good to know they're making a bit of an effort, Thanks ams

Now don't let's get all negative, let's wait and see what they deliver. They may surprise us, and then won't that be a cause for celebration

There again, it may be as you suggest salymap - the usual suspects.

But I'd encourage British music enthusiasts to reserve judgement until the month is up and then we can make representation to Radio 3 as appropriate.

Don't forget those tweets and texts, mind

This was the press release. I'm afraid I rather took it as the latest of the Radio 3 special publicity events when I read:

"Rob Cowan and Sarah Walker will introduce 20 Great Works every weekday in Essential Classics from 9am, showcasing music from some of Britain’s best-loved composers, including Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia On A Theme Of Thomas Tallis, Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas, Delius’s Brigg Fair and Handel’s Music For The Royal Fireworks.

Composer of the Week (weekdays at 12 noon and 6.30pm) looks at four leading English composers – Ralph Vaughan Williams (composer of works including The Lark Ascending and Fantasia On Greensleeves), Sir Charles Hubert Parry (Jerusalem and I Was Glad), Sir Edward Elgar (Pomp And Circumstance Marches and The Dream Of Gerontius), and George Lloyd, known chiefly for his symphonic output. "

But I appreciate that the press release was written for the particular benefit of ... the press who wouldn't respond if they hadn't heard of any of it.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

We've got off to a good celebratory start with our thread about the Heffer programmes (which are presumably part of this)...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

personally, I think the whole thing could have "added value" if Radio Cheshire sent a YTS kid with a microphone, a tape recorder and an asda "Jumbo Jotter" round to EdgeleyRob's house, and told them not to come back to the studio till they had enough material for a weeks proper in depth discussion.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

The comments about the Hefferthon related to the suitability of the presenter rather than to the content surely; as french frank has pointed out, we can enjoy the content while ignoring the presenter

                      Great thoughts, teams

Does EdgeleyRob have that much annual leave left? Can he afford that much instant coffee and chocolate HobKnobs (I'm only thinking of the budget to present to Radio Three, teams )

ER seems to have a solid budget for Choccie stuff. Wise fellow.

june is a rubbish month for it though.

We need to be making a list of out-of-the-way British pieces that are short enough to influence the tweet/Facebook -dominated programmes like Breakfast. Our requests might yield some positive results - after all BBM has been getting brass band recordings played quite often recently

                              excellent plan.

Antongould arranges these things expertly...he and BBM would be a crack team !!
