    AS THE SUN
    MAKES IT NEW
    DAY BY DAY
    MAKE IT NEW
    YET AGAIN
    MAKE IT NEW
    (Pound/King T'ang 18thC BC)

Recalling Salonen's Proms sensations with the Philharmonia, might tonight be the moment for Spring renewal?
I'll have to trust my instincts...

A bit late for Spring renewal, given that we're only about 3 weeks from Midsummer's Day! Perhaps we should be thinking about Britten or Mendelssohn

I've seen the ballet twice, once with the de Basil Russian ballet. As with a lot of ballet and opera I'd rather remember it as I saw/heard it than a pale shadow on the radio.

It would make a fascinating addition to the ICA catalogue and they should snap up this historical document without delay. Hope ICA Classics are reading this.
          I second that, Pet

Wow, was Salonen going for the land speed record in his live Rite just finished on R3? Of all the Rites I've heard in the past couple of weeks or so this was by far the most virtuosic. As an example of how good an orchestra can play these days this was peerless. The trouble is with this approach is that it's only half the story because it's meant to be danced to and at this speed it would be impossible. Hugely exciting anyway and certainly one for the timpani and bass drum enthusiasts!

That'll do for me Pet. They will just have to learn to dance faster!

I had to go out and consequently missed this, but I did think that the idea of the programme as a whole was excellent, especially in bringing together those three seminal works each of which begin with a striking woodwind solo before all kinds of things are unleashed - yes, even the Debussy!...

Yes, orchestras fortunately have no fear of this kind of thing any more - nor indeed should they; I recall a NYOGB Prom years ago in which the original version of Amériques opened and Le Sacre closed with some orchestral arrangements of Gershwin songs and An American in Paris in between in yet another inspired piece of programming!

My review of the Philharmonia Rite - .

Mind you, Petrenko and the RLPO last Friday - .

Ok, smileys don't exactly constitute erudition, but at least it's brief!

Indeed they will! I recorded the whole concert but, as expected, I only managed to catch the Rite. As I say, hugely exciting and one for the archive.

Fabulous performance. Boy, did it shake the dust off my old Quad ESLs 63s?!!
