    Favourite Wagner opera

For me it's Meistersinger by a small margin.

    Götterdämmerung second.

I was rather hoping that I wouldn't have to be put to this sort of choice! It's impossible isn't it?

I just can't decide between Meistersinger or Walküre. Call it a dead heat.

This is really a hard one. For me Gotterdammerung First, Walkure.

An impossible question to answer. One day it might be Parsifal, the next Tristan, the next, Walkure. And so on.....

No-brainer for me, Die Walkure. All day long. What else could it be?

And within it, Act III. Furtwangler, Studio version 1954.

                  Tristan

                  or Parsifal

                  or Meistersinger

                  Yes; Meistersinger.

                  Definitely.

                  Or Gotterdammerung

                  Or Rheingold.

Yeah; Rheingold - pure political satire, none of this Love/Death nonsense.

                  But not Siegried.

Except on the days when I listen to Siegfried.

And a good performance of Dutchman could change my mind.

                  Nah; it's Tristan, really.

                  I think.

On the other hand, you're probably right about Walkure.

My least favourite of the mature operas, by far, is Siegfried.

It was just my bad luck that when I found myself in both Berlin (1990) and Vienna (2008) Siegfried was on at the Deutsche Oper and Wiener Staatsoper respectively. I attended the one in Berlin with Rene Kollo and Deborah Polaski but in 2008 in Vienna conducted by Welser-Möst I could only get a Stehplatz ticket, standing room only. If anyone out there has done this they will know that it gets unbearably hot and stuffy and I gave up after Act 1 as I was just about to pass out.

                            Meistersinger, for me
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                              Thanks Pet.

I do have a complete ring cycle box (Bohm).
I've only ever dipped into it occasionally.
It's on my list,as so many things are,if everyday life didn't get in the way of listening to music................
