My least favourite of the mature operas, by far, is Siegfried.
It was just my bad luck that when I found myself in both Berlin (1990) and Vienna (2008) Siegfried was on at the Deutsche Oper and Wiener Staatsoper respectively. I attended the one in Berlin with Rene Kollo and Deborah Polaski but in 2008 in Vienna conducted by Welser-Möst I could only get a Stehplatz ticket, standing room only. If anyone out there has done this they will know that it gets unbearably hot and stuffy and I gave up after Act 1 as I was just about to pass out.
"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink
No-brainer for me, Die Walkure. All day long. What else could it be?
Meistersinger, for me
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
I envy you for the incredible voyage of discovery you will make.
Thanks Pet.
I do have a complete ring cycle box (Bohm).
I've only ever dipped into it occasionally.
It's on my list,as so many things are,if everyday life didn't get in the way of listening to music................
