No, it can't be, Ams lives there and he's anything but shabby!

And that's what I intend to do, I hadn't heard of Simon Heffer and his scribblings before all this hoo-ha developed.
£100 for a lunch for two seems pretty cheap (according to the restaurant reviews I read in The Guardian)

(hush - don't give certain posters any more reason to bash Guardian readers)

[QUOTE=Simon;298551]And thereby lies my error, of course. I was using the word - and assuming ts had used the word - in its common sense, i.e. meaning ability, perhaps with a hint of flair.[/QUOTE

I don't think I did use the word, but I am aware than in BBC speak it carries heavy nuances.

Strictly speaking, talent refers to the people themselves. 'Top talent' means presenters who are able to attract big audiences which are commercially valuable to advertisers, hence they attract inflated salaries because of the competition to get them. For the BBC, just attracting a big audience is enough: Moyles, Evans, Ross &c.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Or is it, perhaps, an intemperate ad hominem attack with no evidence to back it up?

Nearly 2 million copies of the Mail sold each day. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/tabl...al-newspapers1
Each copy gets ready by, say, 2 people. Getting on for 10 per cent of the population. Then add in those who only read it on the website. That's a lot of unpleasant people.

Before I met she who is now Mrs Wallace, I used to find it a complete turn off to find out that the woman whom I was "seeing" read the Mail. You called at her place to take her out and found a copy of the Daily Mail on the sofa? What should a gentleman do in such circumstances? The relationship had to be ended and quickly but how? Debrett's guides are silent on the matter.

I find it's quite often left behind on tube trains and in caffs and in cafés and I always make sure I take a look. But what I'd do if the object of my affections was found to be a reader ... well I just shudder to think

Reminds me of a work colleague who, astonished, asked me how it was possible for me never to be attracted to right-wing women. Simple, was my answer: firstly I might be attracted to them; then, when I find out they are right-wing, I am unattracted.

This is no surprise. I'm sure they rarely encounter readers of such working-class publications.

In my younger, bachelor, days I found there was rarely time to discuss newspaper-reading habits
