I'm just glad Dutilleux is getting a bit of attention!

The same, however, cannot be said of other French composers of his near-generation, some of whom were championed by Jean Martinon back in the 1970s. I spent yesterday afternoon sifting through several youtube links, including of such names as Andre Jolivet, Jean-Yves Daniel Lesur, Marcel Landowski, Yves Baudrier, Jean-Luis Martinet and Maurice Le Roux - few of whom or whose works ever get presented on Radio 3; I am pretty sure that, were the BBC to launch a month on French 20th century music, their names would be way off the agenda.

I did attempt to draw attention to this group on the old BBC forum, without much success I have to say. Yet people complain about Radio 3's overconcentration on some figures at the expense of others. What do people feel? We've started with Dutilleux - and a couple of months ago Radio 3 actually deigned to broadcast a couple of works by Jolivet. If members are interested, I'll start a thread featuring these links that I've discovered. There might be a few pleasant surprises in store!

It was your advocating the Music of Jolivet that led me to reassess my earlier dismissal of his work, S_A, so that was at least a part of your "not much success"! I'd be delighted to follow a new Thread devoted to this repertoire.

Thanks for your vote of confidence, ferney!

Hmmm, I was just thinking, wwith the big four composers of France, Messiaen, Debussy, faure and Franck, there are a load of other composers who should be recognised more. (Ofcourse Duttileaux). There's Saint Saens too.

Scrub Franck and Saint-Saens and substitute Berlioz, Boulez, Ravel and Rameau (and Charpentier, too)! There's Barraqué, too - and Bizet, if you insist on Saint-Saens.

I have been listening to the Rostropovich recording of his Cello Concerto this evening . It is a remarkably beautiful piece of music and stunningly played. He was so much a conductor in his later years it is good to be reminded what a genius he was on the cello.

It was one of my very first "modern" LPs, back in 1976. To be honest, it took me some time to like both the Dutilleux and the Lutoslawski, but now this LP and these recordings are for me real treasures.

I agree - an unassuming master of his craft.

Stylistically he took what he needed from other composers and moulded it into a highly personal style, one of the most distinct among composers in the 2nd half of the 20th Century.
Dutilleux is a composer who I know little about. I only have 1 CD the recent recording by Esa Pekka-Salonen

Topnotch recommendation for the Complete Orchestral Works has to be the Chandos set with Tortelier/BBCPO, probably the best thing they did together. With beautiful, highly apt, Van Gogh artwork ("The Starry Night") on the cover. Wonderful to have another, if sombre, reason to go back to it.
But do try to seek out Charles Munch's ORF/Paris recordings, Symphony No.2. Metaboles etc, on Erato or possibly RCA somewhere. Always the most idiomatic in phrase and texture.
I was also amazed when the American writer of Ghostbusters got several prominent mentions on R4, when he died recently....

                          Rip Henri Dutilleux....
