I am stunned by this news: Steve was so alive in himself and his Music, I cannot think of him as any other way - and at 53, for God's sake.

    RIP, Steve - and thanks.

Sad, and particularly to me though I'm not related. At least it doesn't sound a painful way to go.

I really enjoy some of his music (hockets?) and I once went to a performance of Horses of Instruction - very vigorous.

An innovator who will be missed.

      RIP

Not my kind of music but sad and rather shocking, this... An intriguing and open-minded presence when presenting TV Proms, was my main contact with him. It was interesting to hear a modern innovator talking about Handel or Brahms.

Those close will be reeling from such an apparently sudden event at such a young age (mine next birthday! ), but at least, yes, there are worse ways to go (although perhaps we don't have the full facts).

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

              Steve Martland RIP

British composer Steve Martland, known for works including large orchestral piece Babi Yar - recorded for Factory Records - dies aged 53, his publisher announces.

How sad. An individual voice in music. I was very struck by his Summer Rounds, a working of Sumer is icumen in. His educational work will be much missed.

Very sorry to hear this news. 53 is no age at all.

So soon after the terribly sad news about Max too
The Queen's official composer is writing his latest symphony in hospital while battling an aggressive form of cancer, it has emerged.

The Grim Reaper has gone for too many musicians in the last year or so.

I didn't know Steve Martland but these people did. He sounds to have been a remarkable teacher.

I knew him well. We met around 1983 and spent some considerable time together in the succeeding years, mostly disagreeing about music and agreeing about much else. More recently we hadn't been in touch so often, being busy in different countries with our different things, but you never think there's a hurry to meet up whenever possible in case something like this happens, not at our age... I shall miss him greatly.

Good to hear Martland's Principia again the other morning on R3. It was used as theme music years ago, IIRC for a late afternoon kids' classical music programme somewhere after the demise of Pied Piper. Liked it so much (particularly if turned up VERY LOUD!!!) that I bought the CD. Maybe I should explore more of him...

...now it's - as it were - too late...
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!
